The FP-5 Flamingo missile strike on the Progress Rocket and Space Center in Samara dealt a major blow to Russia's missile program.
As the military portal Defense Express notes, after the release of a satellite image of the Progress Rocket and Space Center, confirming the destruction of the building where the final assembly of Soyuz launch vehicles took place, it became clear that the Russian missile program had suffered a truly serious blow.
This company produced Russia's primary means of launching satellites and spacecraft into space—the Soyuz-2 launch vehicle. Since 2022, Russia has carried out 84 space launches, 71 of which were carried out using the Soyuz-2, nine on Angara-family launch vehicles, and four on the Proton. "The majority of these missions, 45 launches in particular, were carried out in the interests of the so-called Russian Ministry of Defense and Russian security agencies, when military and dual-use satellites were launched," the analysts emphasized. Thus, the primary customer for the vast majority of Russian space launches is the Russian military. The Soyuz-2 launched the Meridian and Gonets communications satellites, the Obzor-R, Kondor, and Bars Earth observation satellites, and other remote sensing satellites, the Lotos reconnaissance and electronics systems, and the GLONASS navigation system. All of these satellite systems are being used by Russian forces in the war against Ukraine.
Moreover, it was the Soyuz-2 that launched the Russian equivalent of Starlink, Rassvet, into orbit, as well as strategic satellites, in particular, the Tundra missile attack warning system.
These launch vehicles also carried the so-called "Nivelir" inspector satellites, designed to destroy other spacecraft. "The Soyuz-2 is Russia's only launch vehicle capable of delivering humans into orbit. Since 2022, there have been nine such launches of Soyuz spacecraft to the International Space Station," the statement reads.
At the same time, if in the early 2010s the entire ISS depended on Russian Soyuz and Progress spacecraft, which delivered crews, cargo, and adjusted the station's orbit, now the situation is completely different.
Thus, in 2020, Russia lost its monopoly on delivering people into orbit thanks to SpaceX's Crew Dragon, which now delivers more people to the ISS than Soyuz spacecraft – 16 versus just 6 in 2025.
The share of Russian Progress spacecraft in cargo delivery in 2025 was approximately 7.8 tons, compared to approximately 20 tons delivered by Cygnus, HTV-X1, and Dragon cargo ships.
"However, after the Ukrainian strike, the only Soyuz-2 launch vehicles likely remaining in Russia are those already delivered to the spaceports. The company also maintains production of Angara-family launch vehicles at the Polyot enterprise in Omsk," analysts note.
As reported, on August 15, the Russian SRC Progress suffered significant damage as a result of a strike by FP-5 Flamingo cruise missiles. A large fire was reported there.
Analysis of additional data confirmed damage to the production shop for assembling engines for Soyuz launch vehicles and the aircraft maintenance shop of Aviakor Aviation Plant JSC.
