The conflict between Yemen's Houthis and Saudi Arabia risks reaching a new, extremely dangerous level. Years of relative calm could give way to full-scale hostilities, and the Houthis in Sana'a are preparing to open a new front directly on the border with the Saudi kingdom, expanding the escalation zone far beyond the Red Sea.
According to the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar, which has ties to Hezbollah and the Iranian bloc, the Houthis intend to respond to any pressure from Riyadh by transferring hostilities to southern Saudi Arabia, primarily the Jizan and Najran regions. This scenario would mark the final collapse of the tacit ceasefire agreements that have kept direct border clashes at bay in recent years.
Sana'a's concerns are allegedly well-founded. According to media reports, Saudi Arabia has begun actively transferring military reinforcements and weapons to allied Yemeni forces. Specifically, supplies have resumed for representatives of the Al-Islah Party and Salafist groups, and salaries have been restored to loyalist units in several provinces. The Houthis view this activity as clear preparations for a ground invasion.
The threat of a full-scale ground campaign inside Yemen is becoming increasingly clear. Al Jazeera, citing its military sources, notes that the current concentration of forces by the internationally recognized Yemeni government could escalate into a large-scale operation against the Houthis as early as this year. Local Yemeni forces are expected to bear the brunt of the fighting, while Saudi Arabia will provide logistical, financial, and weapons support.
Amid these preparations, the Houthis have adopted preemptive measures. In recent weeks, they have announced a so-called "naval blockade," intensified attacks on Saudi tankers, and launched a series of strikes against oil infrastructure. As Al-Akhbar emphasizes, the terrorists are using the threat to Saudi oil exports as their main lever of economic pressure on Riyadh. The Houthis have already openly warned that any attempt at a large-scale ground offensive will result in harsh retaliatory strikes against the kingdom's strategically important energy targets. Houthis has developed three main principles for countering Saudi Arabia with force: Mirror blockade: blocking sea routes and restricting navigation for Saudi commercial and civilian vessels in response to similar actions by Riyadh. Strikes against infrastructure: systematic attacks on Saudi military bases, equipment deployments, and strategic facilities. Uncompromising sovereignty: the cessation of any attempts to invade Yemen's land, sea, or airspace. In one month Houthi terrorists claimed to have destroyed eight Saudi Arabian oil tankers: five in the Red Sea, and three in the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea. According to them, these attacks forced nearly 50 commercial vessels to urgently adjust their routes.
