During Russia’s large-scale attack, border guards in the Kyiv region shot down a cruise missile heading toward Kyiv. The aerial target was destroyed with machine-gun fire.
Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service clarified that the missile was spotted at dawn by a mobile fire unit on duty in its designated area of responsibility.
“At dawn, one of the mobile fire units of Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service detected an aerial target in its sector – a hostile cruise missile. Shooting down a cruise missile with a machine gun is an extremely difficult task, as the chances of successfully hitting such a target are very low. However, the border guards’ immediate response, professional training, and skill made the impossible possible – the enemy missile was destroyed”, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine said in a statement. After the cruise missile was destroyed, its debris fell outside populated areas. A large crater formed at the impact site. The State Border Guard Service added that another Russian missile posing a threat to Kyiv failed to reach its intended target. The last Russian air attack on Kyiv and the Kyiv region lasted nearly nine hours. The occupiers used dozens of missiles and jet-powered drones. Strikes on residential buildings, a children’s hospital, and infrastructure facilities were recorded in the region. Fifteen people were killed in Kyiv and the surrounding region, while another 39 were injured. The combined Russian attack overnight on Aug. 19-20 involved ballistic and cruise missiles as well as attack drones.
“Unfortunately, ballistic missiles are the most difficult challenge right now. While about 90% of the cruise missiles in this attack were intercepted, the situation with ballistic missiles is significantly worse,” President Volodymyr Zelensky said. The president renewed his call for additional Patriot air-defense missiles, which Ukraine relies on to intercept Russian ballistic missiles. Zelensky said more than 200 sites were damaged in the Russian assault, including 86 residential buildings, a children’s hospital, other social infrastructure and commercial facilities.
He also vowed that Ukraine would respond with further long-range strikes against Russia and said additional resources would be directed toward the country’s deep-strike capabilities.
“We will certainly respond to this Russian strike, just as we respond to other Russian strikes – our response will be fully justified and long-range,” Zelensky said.
