In the lead-up to the State Duma elections this fall, the internal power struggle in Russia is intensifying. In particular, a recent political incident occurred when the nationalist Rodina party filed a lawsuit in the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation demanding that the Yabloko faction be stripped of its right to participate in political elections, according to Forbes .
"The Yabloko party is full of traitors. These are people who work for the West and espouse Western values," Rodina leader Alexei Zhuravlev told reporters.
Just a few days later, the Russian Supreme Court heeded Rodina's proposal and officially banned Yabloko from participating in the elections scheduled for next month. "This episode is highly revealing. After all, elections in Russia in recent years have become purely formal procedures, carefully staged to ensure the Kremlin's desired results while maintaining the semblance of political pluralism. Moreover, Yabloko has been a marginal political force for many years and is unlikely to pose serious competition to Russian President Vladimir Putin's ruling party, United Russia. So why the ban? In short, the answer is Ukraine. Russia's full-scale invasion of its western neighbor, which has been ongoing for five years, is increasingly impacting the lives of ordinary Russians in a number of key ways," Forbes adds.
In particular, from an economic perspective, the war chosen by Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has set the country on a path to prolonged decline. The Kremlin's gradual transition to a war economy has led to serious imbalances, namely rising inflation and a severe labor shortage, placing the country in an increasingly precarious financial position. "Russians also can't rely on a rainy day reserve fund as much as they once did. Moscow has been gradually depleting the easily liquid assets of its National Welfare Fund to cover military expenses and a rapidly growing budget deficit," the publication notes.
As a result, as the Bank of Finland study notes, "Russia's war chest, if it ever existed, has long been empty."
Therefore, the Central Bank of the Russian Federation is increasingly forced to sell off the country's gold reserves to plug the ever-widening holes in the federal budget.
"Then there's the question of manpower. Until now, Moscow has relied on troops from abroad such as Africa and North Korea, unwilling to repeat the experience of its last military mobilization, which, at the end of 2022, triggered the largest exodus of Russians from the country since the Bolshevik Revolution. But now rumors are circulating that the Kremlin is considering another mass mobilization later this year, once the elections are over, and this possibility is undoubtedly worrying many," Forbes analyzes.
Overall, these trends increasingly threaten the unspoken agreement that has sustained the conflict and Putin's popularity—that the war will remain a distant matter, unaffected by the daily lives of ordinary Russians. However, more and more people in Russia understand that this is not the case.
