The deployment of North Korean units could free up combat-ready Russian forces for possible offensive actions in other areas, particularly in northern Ukraine. This was stated by military expert and representative of the Ukrainian Volunteer Army, Serhiy Bratchuk, commenting on the possibility of a Russian offensive from Chernihiv Oblast . He assessed that the deployment of North Korean soldiers directly on Russian territory, rather than in Ukraine, appears more likely.
The expert described this as an interim scenario, allowing the Kremlin to redeploy its own freed-up units to the front. He stated this on the Kyiv 24 television channel.
Bratchuk noted that this is only a modeling exercise for possible scenarios, not a proven fact of North Korean troops participating in combat specifically on Ukrainian territory. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also spoke about the preparation of such a contingent, citing intelligence data. According to Bratchuk, the contingent could be trained at training grounds in the Far East and other Russian training grounds for subsequent redeployment closer to the front lines.
"I think that the deployment of North Korean soldiers on Russian territory is currently more likely. We'll also add, of course, Belgorod, Bryansk, and even part of the Voronezh region. And it's there that all the fighters could, under certain conditions, replace the Russians who would be sent to the front to reinforce a particular sector," Bratchuk said.
The expert added that North Korea's direct involvement in military operations against Ukraine would only be possible once these units physically appear on Ukrainian territory. At the same time, he emphasized that such a scenario cannot be ruled out.
"North Korea benefits enormously from building its relations with Russia this way, because they gain so much. And, of course, 50,000-70,000 troops for an army with a million personnel poses no problem. Especially since Russia covers all the costs," noted Sergei Bratchuk.
Pyongyang benefits from this cooperation not only economically but also by strengthening its relations with Moscow, while Russia, by recruiting tens of thousands of North Korean fighters, conserves its own human resources. According to Bratchuk, the Kremlin fully finances this contingent, making the agreement beneficial for both sides.
At the same time, there is no confirmation yet that the new contingent is planned to be used directly in combat against Ukraine – the main task of the DPRK military in Russia remains border protection and security of facilities, which frees up Russian units for the front.
