The first Swedish Saab JAS 39 Gripen multirole fighter jets could arrive in Ukraine as early as 2027, aviation expert Konstantin Krivolap announced on Radio NV .
"I really hope we learn of their arrival completely unexpectedly. They'll arrive, shoot down one or two Su-34s or even Su-35s, and then we'll know it's the first warning—the first two or even four aircraft are already here," he noted.
According to him, our pilots have been training in Sweden for a long time and are mastering these aircraft. He added that Ukraine is desperately short of pilots because so many aircraft have arrived, and they continue to arrive. "I hope that we will unexpectedly learn before the new year that the Gripen is already operational," Krivolap added.
He emphasizes that Gripen can help halt the destruction of Ukrainian cities near the line of contact by Russian KABs. He believes that once two or three Russian aircraft carrying KABs are shot down, the enemy will be forced to respond.
As reported, Ukraine plans to purchase Swedish Saab JAS 39 Gripen multirole fighter jets.
The Gripen project began in the 1980s to meet the needs of the Swedish Air Force. The core idea was to enable rapid response in the event of a potential war with the USSR. A versatile aircraft was needed for interception, ground attack, and reconnaissance, capable of operating from poorly prepared or short runways, and even from roads. The abbreviation JAS in the name stands for "Jakt, Attack, Spaning" – "fighter, strike aircraft / attack aircraft, reconnaissance".
Overall, the Gripen is classified as a fourth-generation and fourth-and-a-half-generation fighter. It is effectively a competitor to the F-16, but with its own unique characteristics.
The Gripen is a single-engine multirole fighter. The C/D versions have a top speed of approximately Mach 2, over 2,100 km/h and a combat radius of approximately 800–1,300 km, depending on the mission and armament. The aircraft is powered by a Volvo RM12 turbojet engine, based on the American General Electric F404.
One of the Gripen's key features is its low operating costs and rapid maintenance. According to Saab, reactivating the aircraft takes less than 10 minutes for intercept missions and less than 20 minutes for strike missions. Maintenance can be performed by a small team of technicians.
