One in three captured Russian soldiers turns out to be foreign mercenaries, according to Brigadier General Andrei Beletsky, commander of the Third Army Corps. He made this statement in an interview with American blogger Lori Loomer . According to the general, due to its enormous losses, Russia is forced to actively recruit mercenaries from around the world. These mercenaries are most often from Equatorial Africa, India, Pakistan, the Middle East, and Latin America, particularly Colombia and Venezuela. These mercenaries join Russia primarily for money, the promise of a Russian passport, or relocation to the country.
Beletsky's statement was reported by the Telegram channel "Novosti.LIVE," which relayed details of the commander's interview with an American blogger. The general described in detail which contingent of mercenaries was joining the ranks of the occupation army. "These are mostly either cartels or, conversely, former police officers," emphasized Andrei Beletsky, commander of the Third Army Corps.
The general emphasized that the Kremlin was forced to recruit foreigners due to the scale of losses at the front. A significant portion of those recruited lack military experience, but are linked to criminal organizations or, conversely, previously served in law enforcement agencies in their home countries. The conversation with Beletsky wasn't the American blogger's first during her stay in Ukraine. Laura Loomer, a member of US President Donald Trump's inner circle, held several high-profile meetings with Ukrainian officials and military personnel in July.
Her views on the war changed noticeably after a personal visit to Kyiv and conversations with eyewitnesses of the events. For many people living in the world's poorest regions, the salary offered by the Russian army is a huge incentive, as it means a chance to escape poverty and support their families. Foreign nationals fighting for Russia in Ukraine are often called mercenaries. Russia has insisted that all foreign nationals partaking in the "special military operation," as it calls its war in Ukraine, are involved on a voluntary basis. In March, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov claimed during a press conference with his Kenyan counterpart that "no one is being hired, just as no one is being recruited in the case of the special military operation. Volunteers get there in full compliance with Russian legislation." The involvement of foreign nationals in the war is receiving increased attention, with their families protesting from Nepal to Peru. Some politicians, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have even brought up the subject in meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to media reports, Russia restricted the recruitment of citizens from various "friendly" countries in February 2026. A list of those countries has not been published.
