The destruction of critical facilities has caused the worst fuel crisis in Russia since the collapse of the Soviet Union and forced the government to impose restrictions on fuel sales, according to the Financial Times. İn this case Ukrainian-American journalist David Kirichenko reports from the frontlines of Ukraine, where he was embedded with the Unmanned Systems Battalion of Ukraine’s 110th Separate Mechanized Brigade. He speaks about kill zones. The fortress city of Kostyantynivka is a good example of what the kill zone now means: roads littered with destroyed UGVs, burnt vehicles, drones hunting overhead, and soldiers forced to walk for miles to reach the front. In some sectors, wounded soldiers have been trapped for months, unable to be evacuated, while surviving with medicine delivered by aerial drones.
“Without the robots, it would be impossible. We would never get anyone out alive,” Kupa, who commands a unit of unmanned ground vehicles used for evacuation and resupply, told The Times. The front has changed. Drones watch the roads. Fiber-optic drones sit in the dark, waiting. The old margin for error is gone. Soldiers used to talk about making a wrong turn; now, due to the sheer number of drones hunting, it could kill them. In cities like Kyiv or Dnipro, the war is often filtered through secondhand stories and rumors. The front strips much of that away. Here, you see the war with more clarity, as soldiers live and fight under drones, artillery, glide bombs and constant fear.
Ukraine and Russia are constantly advancing the new technology, which is transforming modern warfare. Both sides have had to abandon age-old tactics of gathering troops, vehicles and artillery in a relatively compressed area along the front lines. Such visible targets are easy prey for drones.
Instead, teams as small as two to three soldiers hide in tiny dugouts hollowed under the ground, scattered across a huge kill zone extending many kilometres on either side of the line of contact between the two sides. Infantrymen often act as lookouts, avoiding direct engagement that could give away their position, instead calling in drones to do the killing.
Elite Ukrainian special operators are carrying out more infiltration missions into Russian-held territory as the drone-infested kill zone continues to grow, making larger maneuvers difficult.
Infiltration operations typically involve small groups of soldiers sneaking past enemy lines to complete a mission, which can range from taking a key position to conducting ambushes, raids, and assaults.
For Ukraine's Special Operations Forces, "the number of missions has increased over the past year," an operator in the 4th Ranger Regiment told Business Insider in a recent interview. The expansion of the kill zone has the Ukrainians not only executing more infiltration-style missions but also tasking operators to confront the challenges posed by similar Russian activities.
The 4th Ranger Regiment operator, who is the second-in-command of a small unit and requested to be identified only by his call sign "Gur" for security reasons, said he tends to receive "specific, targeted missions." Ukrainian soldiers and officials often describe the front line as a "kill zone," an area heavily saturated with drones that can quickly attack troops and military vehicles, making any movement very dangerous. Drones are responsible for roughly 90% of all battlefield strikes.
