"Turkey's interests are our red line." These words were made by Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan, Head of the Foreign Policy Department of the Presidential Administration, in an interview with Haber Global within the framework of the visit of Turkish journalists to Azerbaijan with the Turkey-Azerbaijan Friendship, Cooperation and Solidarity Foundation and the Intercultural Association Organization. Hikmet Hajiyev touched upon the ongoing peace process with Armenia and emphasized the need to change the Armenian constitution in order to achieve final peace.
In an interview with Haber Global, Hikmet Hajiyev assessed the events taking place in the region and the ongoing peace process with Armenia. He noted that Azerbaijan is committed to achieving sustainable peace in the region.
However, he stated that for this to happen, it is necessary to remove the provisions in the Armenian constitution that provide for territorial claims against Azerbaijan, as well as Turkey. He noted that this is a condition for a final peace agreement.
"We are waiting for the removal of the provision in the Armenian constitution that provides for territorial claims against Azerbaijan, as well as Turkey. The signals we have received in this regard are that the process towards the adoption of a new constitution will soon begin in Armenia. Perhaps a national referendum will be held. After the territorial claims against Azerbaijan in the preamble are removed from the Armenian constitution, we do not see a problem for the final signing of the peace agreement. But beyond this, there is already de facto real peace in our region," he noted.
Hikmet Hajiyev also spoke about the resolution prepared by Israel regarding the events of 1915.
"This seriously worried Azerbaijan, because Azerbaijan has always considered the interests of brotherly Turkey a priority for itself, and this is always a red line for us. As soon as this issue arose, Azerbaijan also began intensive diplomatic traffic on the instructions of our President. We also clearly conveyed messages to Israel that, first of all, the adoption of such a decision is unfair, does not reflect historical reality, and we do not consider the adoption of this decision to be correct. It is a positive fact that these messages from Azerbaijan were also taken seriously by Israel, and we believe that further progress of the issue was prevented. We believe that this would be a completely unfair step that does not reflect historical reality in any way," Hikmet Hajiyev noted.
He also emphasized that the events of 1915 were used by Western countries as a propaganda topic against Turkey. Hikmet Hajiyev also drew attention to the brotherly relations between Turkey and Azerbaijan. He noted that the two countries have always defended each other's interests and will continue to do so:
"Azerbaijan is at the table where Turkey is not, and Turkey is at the table where Azerbaijan is not. Therefore, we respond decisively to every step that goes against the interests of our country and will continue to respond in the future."
Hikmet Hajiyev also announced the latest status of the work being carried out to clear Armenian mines:
"We are carrying out our work intensively, we have cleared very large areas and have obtained in-depth information on this issue. We have greatly increased our technological inventory, we have robotic mine clearance devices and we also have devices that we purchased from brotherly Turkey, which are performing very effectively."
