A Russian major general who served as deputy commander of Russia’s 49th Combined Arms Army in 2022 was killed in a blast at a Moscow restaurant on August 1, according to reports. Major General Valery Plokhotnyuk was among those killed in the explosion that occurred during a celebration of the 55th birthday of Russian Aerospace Forces Commander-in-Chief Alexander Chaiko. Journalists have since identified those buried at Moscow’s Troekurovskoye Cemetery in highly restricted ceremonies. Plokhotnyuk’s funeral was held yesterday, while today’s funeral was reportedly for Daniil Peredriy, Chaiko’s son-in-law. Both men are said to have died in the August 1 explosion outside the restaurant. Earlier reports claimed that an explosive device carried by a female suicide attacker detonated as a vehicle with flashing emergency lights approached the restaurant’s terrace. According to one version, Plokhotnyuk may have arrived at the celebration in that vehicle to attend his close friend’s birthday event. The funerals were conducted under unusually strict security measures. From early morning, the cemetery was surrounded by officers from Russia’s Federal Protective Service, FSO, and the National Guard, Rosgvardiya. Security buses were stationed nearby, while traffic police and plainclothes officers controlled access to the area. Visitors were required to pass through screening checkpoints before entering. The ceremony for the general was accompanied by an honor guard carrying the flag of the Russian Aerospace Forces, although a Russian Ground Forces flag was placed at the gravesite — an unusual detail that has drawn attention.
