Ukrainian drones have attacked for the first time a distribution center belonging to Lenta, one of Russia's largest supermarket chains, owned by Russian billionaire Alexei Mordashov. Mordashov and his family are worth an estimated $37 billion . Observers write that Ukraine endured for a long time, but Russia's constant attacks on warehouses containing medicines and food have become a red line for Kyiv. Now, not only Wildberries warehouses but also the most sensitive facilities for Russian society will be under attack, potentially causing a surge in inflation and shortages of many goods. The Moscow Times reports that the hub in the Leningrad region was hit: the facility has already stopped accepting goods from suppliers. The drone crashed at Lenta's hub. A fire broke out at the facility, which took about four hours to extinguish. One of the company's employees sustained burns. Lenta is one of the largest supermarket chains in Russia, with over 7,000 stores. According to Forbes, Mordashov ranks first among Russia's richest businessmen. Ukrainian FP-1 drones, according to media reports, struck a Wildberries logistics hub in Krasny Bor, Leningrad Oblast. This facility is considered one of the largest marketplace centers in northwestern Russia. The attack on Lenta demonstrates that Ukraine's long-range campaign is gradually expanding from oil refineries, ports, and military logistics to major distribution centers that underpin everyday trade. Following the strikes on Wildberries, not only marketplaces but also the grocery retail infrastructure are now at risk.
Recall, in recent months, Ukraine has conducted a sustained campaign of long-range drone strikes against Russia’s oil-refining sector also. The campaign has targeted virtually every major refining facility, from border-region sites in Krasnodar krai and Rostov oblast to facilities deep inside Russia, including Bashkortostan, Siberia, and the Volga region. Essentially no major fuel producer has remained untouched. The latest strikes underscore the systematic nature of this campaign, including attacks on Gazprom Neftekhim Salavat LLC, one of Russia’s largest refining and petrochemical complexes, which supplied approximately 5 percent of the country’s domestic gasoline and diesel production, as well as repeated attacks on the Afipsky, Ilsky, and Syzran refineries.
Ukraine first struck Russian oil refineries in mid-2022. By summer of this year, it has intensified these operations, transforming isolated attacks into a coordinated campaign aimed at undermining Russia’s fuel infrastructure and reducing its ability to export petroleum products. The result has been a fuel crisis unprecedented in scale and geographic reach during the war.
Strikes against refineries in Bashkortostan, Krasnodar krai, Samara oblast, and the Omsk Oil Refinery, the largest in Russia, demonstrated that geographic distance no longer guarantees security. The Omsk Oil Refinery, owned by Gazprom Neft, accounts for roughly one-tenth of Russia’s total refining capacity and had long been considered virtually untouchable. Its shutdown following a July 7 strike, during which key primary refining units were damaged, represented not only an operational setback but also a symbolic milestone. That Ukrainian drones were able to penetrate such distances and successfully strike the facility undermined the Kremlin’s long-standing narrative that Russia’s strategic rear areas remained beyond Ukraine’s reach. According to available estimates, as much as 85 percent of Russia’s refining capacity is now within the operational range of Ukrainian strike systems. Ukraine is not only targeting new facilities but also repeatedly striking damaged refineries undergoing repairs, rendering repair efforts largely ineffective in the short term.
