As a group of Russian assault troops approached Ukrainian defensive positions on the front line east of Donetsk, they were met by an unexpected enemy: a combat robot armed with a flamethrower, Bloomberg reports .
The publication reported that when the Russians took up positions near the forest belt, the robot got to work, turning the dry summer grass around them into a blazing cauldron.
According to the chief engineer of the 93rd separate mechanized brigade of Ukraine, call sign "Mag", a machine gun crew followed him to eliminate the surviving attackers. Ukraine has reportedly set a goal of producing at least 50,000 of the vehicles this year for use on the battlefield to bolster its forces opposing the Russian armed forces.
"It's already impossible to imagine defense without drones, and the same applies to unmanned ground vehicles. Frontline logistics, evacuation of the wounded, combat missions—the use of unmanned ground vehicles is currently expanding at the fastest rate," noted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The publication reported that in July, Ukrainian troops delivered a remotely controlled combat robot ashore using an unmanned sea drone, which flew 11 kilometers to reach the shore of the occupied Kinburn Spit in southern Ukraine.
"The Wolly 7.62 ground robot was equipped with a machine gun and ammunition, which it used to fire at Russian troop positions, forcing them to retreat from part of the coast, after which the robot self-destructed," the article adds. According to a serviceman with the call sign "House Goblin," who proposed using the $8,000 robot with the 123rd Separate Territorial Defense Brigade, the assault was carried out by four Ukrainian operators.
Ukrainian officials say unmanned systems help offset the army's lag behind Russia in personnel numbers by freeing soldiers from tasks such as dangerous logistics transport to supply troops on the front lines and evacuating the wounded, thereby saving their lives.
The publication emphasizes that this is an extremely important aspect in a country that is facing resistance to the mobilization necessary to replenish the ranks of Ukraine's 900,000-strong army.
Robert Brovdi, Commander of the Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Forces, explained that infantry units also use unmanned vehicles for combat missions. Some of them are used to deliver mines or conduct attacks.
"The zone extending at least 25 kilometers from the line of contact is effectively a 'death zone,' where the risk of casualties is extremely high due to the large number of drones. Therefore, replacing the human factor with drones significantly reduces casualties," he noted. The article points out that, with a population roughly a quarter of Russia's and a significantly smaller economy, Ukraine had no choice but to try to outinnovate its rival. Russia has also improved its drone technology, modifying Iranian Shahed drones to increase their speed and accuracy. It was the first to deploy attack drones on the battlefield, controlled by lightweight fiber-optic cables rather than radio signals to avoid radio interference.
"While tank formations and large-scale troop movements predominated in the early years of the war, the situation on the front lines in eastern and southern Ukraine is now largely at a stalemate, monitored by drones that strike any moving target," the publication explains. Added to this is the geopolitical component, as the US and Europe seek to adapt their armed forces to the new realities of war.
The article notes that while Ukraine's path to joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization remains blocked, NATO countries are lining up to adopt its tactical innovations using drones and robots.
It is explained that, due to the fact that Ukraine is concluding defense partnership agreements with a number of European countries, Kyiv sees an opportunity to occupy a central place in the continent's security structures, even without being a NATO member.
The publication noted that Ukraine has already concluded agreements on drone supplies with countries ranging from Saudi Arabia to the Netherlands, and is currently discussing new defense partnerships, particularly with the United States.
In May, US Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll called the operating system of the Ukrainian drone network "absolutely incredible":
"It fully integrates every drone, every sensor, and every firing platform into a single network. Our system doesn't do that."
