Extended-range artillery shells for Russians by Ukraine: Kyiv expands the "kill zone"

Ukrainian artillery units will receive shells with extended range by the end of summer. Ukraine hopes this will significantly expand the so-called "kill zone" on the front line, Bloomberg reports .
It is noted that the first batch of deliveries is expected to increase the firing range of 155mm guns to at least 60 kilometers. This will include, among other things, laser-guided projectiles.
The agency added that more advanced munitions powered by small ramjet engines could more than double this range. All munitions will be compatible with existing 155mm artillery batteries. Ukraine wants to increase pressure on Russia to end the war by striking targets deep within its territory. However, Ukraine is also vulnerable, and the Kremlin is exploiting its lack of air defense capabilities to target civilians.
The agency noted that the "kill zone" is an area between Ukrainian and Russian troops where virtually any person or object can be quickly detected and attacked by a drone. Currently, this zone is approximately 30 kilometers wide, placing the rear areas beyond the reach of conventional artillery.
Longer-range missiles could push back Russia, giving Ukrainian ground forces space to advance safely, disrupting counterattacks, and virtually securing Crimea. A source close to the Russian Ministry of Defense told reporters that the Russian armed forces do not possess the number of extended-range artillery systems that Ukraine's Western allies can provide.
"If Russian forces are forced to withdraw their guns, warehouses, and headquarters further south, Ukraine will gain time, space, and improve its chances of survival. This will also complicate any future Russian offensive in the region," Reuben Stewart, a senior fellow in land warfare at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, told reporters.
The agency recalled that in June, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense announced the purchase of 15,000 extended-range projectiles from Denmark. The ministry also announced a tender for the supply of 155mm extended-range artillery projectiles, noting that there is a strong demand for such ammunition on the front lines.
The agency noted that extended-range artillery shells could use sabots—casings attached to small shells for use with charges designed for larger shells. They could also be equipped with folding wings and other means to increase their range.
When guided by GPS, these projectiles can hit a target just a few meters wide. Laser-guided versions are guided by a beam aimed at the target, often using a drone. For example, the American M127 Copperhead and the Vulcano—a joint project between Italy's Leonardo SpA and Germany's Diehl Defence and Land Systems GmBH—both feature laser guidance. Some arms manufacturers have also been experimenting for years with installing small ramjet engines into artillery shells, allowing them to extend their range beyond 150 kilometers.
