Ukraine has changed its approach to long-range strikes against Russian energy infrastructure, writes Financial Times. It is now focusing on targeting critical components of oil refineries and other facilities, which are difficult to replace. This should ensure a longer-lasting impact from the attacks and increase Russia's restoration costs. According to Ukrainian military officials, long-range drone operators, and energy experts, the campaign’s goal is no longer limited to setting fire to storage tanks or damaging individual buildings. Instead, the strikes are targeting critical infrastructure without which these facilities cannot operate. "Ukraine will continue to exert shock and technological pressure on Russia by all possible means. We must scale up what is already proving effective," said the acting defense minister Yevhen Khmara, with special mention of the campaign long-range strikes. According to the FT, before each operation, drone operators consult with engineers and industry experts who determine which pipelines, connection points, or other equipment are critical to the facility’s operations and will take the longest to replace. Former Minister of Defense of Ukraine and Head of the Center for Defense Strategies Andriy Zagorodnyuk explained that the Ukrainian side views the Russian energy system as a single, interconnected grid. "We think of Russia as a system. Understanding this system allows us to identify critical points where the impact will be much more significant," he said. At the same time, Ukrainian units began repeatedly attacking the same critical equipment even before repairs were completed, in order to prevent the facilities from resuming operations. This approach is confirmed by sources interviewed by the FT, as well as by the publication’s analysis of satellite imagery.
Commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces Robert Brovdi stated that the attacks on energy infrastructure are part of a broader strategy to destroy sources funding for the Russian war and the military-industrial complex.
"The goal is clear: to cut off the sources of funding for the war Putin "and the military-industrial complex that supplies the occupying army with weapons," he emphasized.
According to Ukrainian officials, intelligence data received from the United States and France also contributed to more precise target selection, helping to identify the locations of Russian air defense systems and routes that allow drones to penetrate deep into Russian territory.
Recall, Ukraine has updated its list of priority remote Russian targets against which it will carry out precision strikes. This was announced on the evening of July 26 reported president Volodymyr Zelenskyy following a meeting with the acting Minister of Defense By Yevhen Khmara, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Mykhailo Drapaty and Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine By Igor Skibyuk. Zelenskyy also said that since the start of the long-range strikes against Russia, Ukrainian defenders have carried out more than 1,000 fire missions. The main goal of the strikes remains, as before, to push the Kremlin toward negotiations. "The strategic depth of the rear, which has long been a Russian advantage, is now becoming a particular problem for Russia's political and military leadership," he emphasized.
