The Saudi Arabian army launched airstrikes against Iranian-backed Shiite militias in Iraq, US Central Command announced on its Facebook page. This marks the first time Riyadh has openly entered into a war with Tehran. According to CENTCOM, the United States and Saudi Arabia launched precision-guided strikes against Shiite militias in Iraq. This was in response to strikes by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps against U.S. military targets in the Middle East and against Saudi Arabia's energy infrastructure. The US and Saudi Arabia carried out airstrikes against Shiite militias across eastern Iraq. Logistics and military facilities were targeted. The Iranian Foreign Ministry condemned the US and Saudi Arabian military attack on Iraq. Tehran believes Washington is attempting to expand the war in the Middle East. A new escalation of the military conflict between the US and Iran began on July 7. The Iranian army fired on three tankers attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz without Tehran's permission. In response, the US launched massive strikes against Iranian military facilities.

The war in Iran has taken a significant turn even as the memorandum of understanding to stop the fighting is supposed to be in progress. Saudi Arabia said its overnight strikes on Iran-backed group targets in Iraq were carried out in self-defense and warned it would take further military action if the groups launched new attacks against the kingdom.

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said the strikes, conducted by the Saudi Armed Forces in coordination with the US Central Command, targeted "specific" sites in Iraq linked to attacks on the kingdom's oil facilities. The ministry said the operation was carried out under the right of self-defense guaranteed by international law in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter. It accused Iranian-backed groups in Iraq of adopting "an irresponsible escalatory approach" despite Saudi efforts to help reduce regional tensions and preserve regional security and stability. The ministry said the groups had violated international law and ignored the principles of good neighborliness and Islamic brotherhood. While reiterating that the kingdom does not seek escalation, the ministry warned that if further attacks occur, Saudi Arabia "will not hesitate to take all necessary measures to preserve the Kingdom's sovereignty and protect its citizens and assets." In a separate statement, the Defense Ministry said the joint operation with the US was launched in response to attacks originating from Iraqi territory against Saudi petroleum facilities. Yemen's Houthi rebels have launched several attacks on Saudi Arabia this week, including on oil infrastructure in the Eastern Province, home to the kingdom's key energy hub. According to available information, some of the attacks were carried out from Iraqi territory with the participation of Iranian-linked groups and under the coordination of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. This evening, reports came in from Yemen of a new attack against Saudi Arabia. However, official statements from both sides diverge: Riyadh accuses groups affiliated with it of launching missiles from Iraqi territory, the Houthis claim responsibility for the attacks, and Iraqi authorities have announced the launch of an investigation into the incident.
