Ukraine has launched a series of strikes against the logistics centers of Wildberries, Russia's largest marketplace , which plays a much more important role in supplying the Russian military than might initially appear. Russian opposition journalist Alexey Kovalev writes about this in an article for Foreign Policy .
As the publication notes, at first glance, Wildberries may appear to be a purely civilian company, given that tens of millions of Russians order ordinary goods through the platform every day. At the same time, as the author explains, the marketplace has effectively become one of the key supply channels for Russian military equipment. Due to shortages, delays, and problems with official military logistics, many units rely on private procurement, volunteer assistance, and crowdfunding.
Until recently, the Wildberries website even had a separate category, "Everything for the Air Defense Forces," featuring over 200,000 products—from body armor and tactical helmets to drone components. After the initial strikes, this catalog was removed, but the products themselves remained available in other categories. The author also notes that many items were marked as combat-tested and were actively purchased for the Russian military. "This is precisely what makes attacks on warehouses logical. Disrupt the platform that connects and supports this informal supply chain, and the losses won't be limited to the company, warehouse workers, and small vendors who lose their goods," Kovalev emphasizes.
The journalist also considers the psychological impact of these attacks important. Tens of millions of Russians make purchases through Wildberries, and millions more earn money as sellers on the platform. Following the destruction of the warehouses, videos of entrepreneurs complaining about the loss of goods and income began appearing en masse on Russian social media. Thus, the author notes, the war is increasingly impacting not only the military but also the everyday lives of the Russian middle class.
It is estimated that after the initial attacks, Ukraine disabled approximately 8% of Wildberries' logistics capacity. Direct losses from warehouse damage alone are estimated at approximately $400 million, while sellers' losses due to destroyed goods could reach an additional $2 billion. Russian authorities have provided virtually no coverage of these events in state media, and the Kremlin, as the author notes, is already considering financial support for the company.
Recently, Ukrainian drone attacks have hit industrial facilities in Russia’s western city of Ryazan, causing several to catch fire and forcing major retailer Wildberries to evacuate its local warehouses, according to authorities.
Ryazan Governor Pavel Malkov said 45 drones were shot down over the region overnight Tuesday, with falling debris causing a fire in an “industrial area” and damaging a home and a building. Six people were hospitalised with injuries, he said in a post on Telegram. The report comes as Ukraine ramps up attacks on Russian industrial sites, including those belonging to Wildberries, which Kyiv accuses of helping to supply the Russian army.
Drones have damaged at least seven Wildberries warehouses in the past several days, destroying about 10 percent of the company’s storage capacity, disrupting operations and inflicting losses on tens of thousands of small businesses that sell goods and services on the platform, according to the company and local authorities.
