U.S. and Lebanese military officials toured a village in southern Lebanon Friday as a U.S.-brokered framework agreement between Lebanon and Israel is being implemented ahead of a new round of negotiations expected to begin in Rome on Aug. 4. According to Associated Press video from the village showed military vehicles carrying Lebanese and U.S. officials through Zawtar al-Gharbieh, one of several villages included in the pilot zone established under the agreement. The framework aims to expand the Lebanese army's deployment in parts of southern Lebanon as Israeli forces withdraw from designated areas. The visit came hours after the Israeli military said it had dismantled what it described as a major underground tunnel network that the Hezbollah militant group used beneath the strategic Beaufort Ridge in southern Lebanon. In a statement, the Israeli military said the tunnels had served as a command center for Hezbollah and was used during the war to launch drones, anti-tank missiles and explosive devices toward Israeli forces and northern Israel. It said the operation was carried out during what it described as a limited activity inside the security zone and that Israeli troops remain deployed in the area. Around midnight, residents across southern Lebanon reported hearing powerful explosions. Lebanon's state-run National News Agency said one of the largest detonations in recent months shook the area between Beaufort Castle and the eastern outskirts of Yohmor al-Shaqif, with the blast heard across wide parts of southern Lebanon. The agency said the explosions dramatically altered the surrounding rocky terrain and agricultural land. Later Friday, another detonation was reported near the southern village of Deir Seryan. Video from the area showed plumes of smoke rising above nearby hills.
