Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief Alexander Moiseyev announced the start of work on the "Tsar Drone," an unmanned ship. However, this news sparked not joy but collective indignation among Z-patriots. Moiseyev announced the start of work on the "Tsar Drone" in an interview with the Russian Ministry of Defense's Zvezda television channel. He noted that it would be a 500-ton vessel. "Russia is developing a drone of such a size that it will no longer be an unmanned boat, but an unmanned ship!" said the Russian admiral. He clarified that the funds have already been allocated and work on the "Tsar Drone" is underway. Z-channels reacted violently to the "sensation." The "Mine Division" concluded that this was yet another mega-project aimed at embezzling state funds. "The very first question that arises why? Oh, yes, the OSKs or United Shipbuilding Corporation of the Russian Federation are hungry," wrote Z-channel. Oleg Tsarev, a traitor to Ukraine who defected to Russia, also spoke out. He expressed confidence that the "Tsar Drone" would be ineffective in a modern war. "Now is the time for cheap and effective unmanned weapons. But we won't be building a small, fast, and cheap unmanned combat vehicle. We'll be making a super-marine unmanned vehicle. Displacing 500 tons. We'll spend billions. The reader is led to believe that no one else has anything like this—that there are no analogues in the world. "World's first" is, to put it mildly, an understatement... Analogues have long existed. And now we see Ukrainian unmanned combat vehicles attacking our ships and attempting to attack the Crimean Bridge. But we don't see our unmanned combat vehicles anywhere... Now, we clearly desperately need small unmanned combat vehicles. We need them now, not later, after the big one," Tsarev wrote. The Z-channel "UAV Developer" also spoke out. "What an amazing man this Moiseyev is. He witnessed the sinking of half the Black Sea Fleet, including its flagship, by a country without a navy, using wolf pack tactics. And yet he decided to build the Tirpitz. But now you understand a little better why everything is so 'good' at sea... Moiseyev proposes building a five-hundred-ton black-water battleship, which will be sunk just like any other similar ship," the propagandist writes. The announcement drew criticism from several major pro-war channels and commentators, who argued that Russia’s navy is trying to move to large and expensive uncrewed ships before establishing mass production of small, cheap attack boats of the kind Ukraine used to drive the Russian navy out of Crimea in 2024. More recently, Ukraine has used sea drones to strike Russian ships as far away as the port in Novorossiysk, along with oil infrastructure located on the Black Sea coast.
The pro-war Telegram project Rybar wrote on Max that large uncrewed platforms equipped with anti-submarine systems and air defenses may indeed have a role to play in the fleet, but described them as the next stage of development. Rybar argued that the navy must first master serial production of small uncrewed surface vessels and use them to test the necessary technologies. Mass production of 500-ton uncrewed ships would be hampered by limits in the production of engines, hulls, and onboard equipment, the channel said.
