At the end of June, an event that had been eagerly awaited almost since the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian war took place. Former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov and the Swedish group Saab AB announced the signing of a final contract for the supply of 16 Saab JAS 39E/F Gripen fighters to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The delivery is scheduled for 2029-2030. In addition to the aircraft themselves, Ukraine will receive equipment, as well as logistical and technical support. In other words, everything necessary for the full operation of the Gripens. By the time the aircraft are received, Ukraine will already have experience operating these machines, as it is due to receive the first 16 Gripen C/D aircraft in early 2027. These are relatively old machines that can still be compared in their potential with the F-16 Block 20 MLU available in the Ukrainian Armed Forces, but, unfortunately, not with the Russian "Sushki". Another thing is the JAS 39E/F. This is not just the best Swedish combat aircraft. As of today, it is one of the most powerful fighters in Europe. Both batches do not look large, but this is just the beginning. Ultimately, Ukraine wants to receive up to 150 fourth-generation fighters from Sweden. Mostly - JAS 39E/F. The threat from Russian aviation is growing every month. According to the Ukrainian General Staff, another record was set in June for the number of guided bombs used by the Russian Aerospace Forces. Last month, the Russians dropped 8,266 aerial bombs which is 10% more than in May. That's more than 270 aerial bombs per day. The main carrier of aerial bombs from the UMPK, as well as the longer-range UMPB D-30SN, is the Su-34 front-line bomber. Due to the long range of the bombs, which in the case of the D-30SN reaches 100 km, it can strike without entering the range of most Ukrainian air defense systems. The most effective means of counteraction is fighter aircraft. At first glance, the large and clumsy Su-34 is an ideal target, which is perfectly destroyed by air-to-air missiles. At the same time, Russian bombers do not fly alone - they are covered by fighters of various types, among which the most advanced is the Su-35S. At least, if we talk about mass machines. This aircraft is superior to both the modernized Soviet MiG-31BM and the newer Su-30SM/30SM2, mainly in terms of onboard electronics and flight characteristics. As for the fifth-generation Su-57, the Russians have several dozen aircraft that can only be conditionally called serial. The aircraft, although it can perform combat missions, is not the mainstay of the Russian air force. And it will not become one very soon. The Russians have much more Su-35S - about 130-140 units. Ukraine recently shot down one plane, and in total during the armed aggression, Moscow lost about ten machines of this type. The losses are not critical - in the past year alone, the Russian Federation has produced at least 14 new Su-35S. In other words, the Su-35 was, is, and will remain the best Russian fighter for at least a long time. At the same time, the JAS 39E/F will become Ukraine's best air fighter, and over time has every chance of becoming one of the main combat aircraft of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It is difficult to compare these aircraft because they belong to different weight categories. At the same time, Ukraine may not have a better fighter. Let's try to figure out whether the new Gripen has a chance against the Su-35C. Next to the 35th, the Gripen looks about like a passenger car against the background of the KamAZ. The Russian machine weighs 19,000 kg, while the mass of the JAS 39E/F is 8,000 kg. The greater mass of fuel that can be filled leads to the fact that the combat radius of the Su-35 is 1500-1600 km. In the JAS 39E/F Gripen it is on average about 1300 km. The difference, at first glance, is not very large, but in the case of the Swedish aircraft this figure is achieved only in combination with outboard fuel tanks. The combat load of the Su reaches 8,000 kg, while that of the Gripen is up to 7,200 kg.
