Expensive "HIMARS analogue": Ukrainian Armed Forces hit Russian Sarma MLRS for the first time

For the first time, Ukrainian military forces have destroyed a Russian Sarma multiple launch rocket system, each launcher of which costs approximately 155 million rubles. The damaged system was used by Russian occupation forces to provide fire support for the mechanized offensive in the Dobropillya sector. The 1st Corps of the National Guard of Ukraine "Azov" published a video of the destruction of an enemy MLRS on its Facebook page . The Russian Sarma is a development of the Kama project, which was intended to create a lighter 300mm rocket artillery system capable of using guided munitions.
Russian state media first publicly reported on the development of the new system in 2023. The MLRS was expected to feature a KamAZ wheeled chassis, increased mobility, and a new automated fire control and guidance system. The first public showing of the Sarma took place two years later at the Motovilikha Plants plant. "Military" notes that one of the new system's key features is its significant weight reduction. Compared to the 33-ton Tornado-S, the Sarma's weight has been reduced by almost 10 tons. To accommodate the launcher, Russian developers used a four-axle KamAZ-63501 chassis with an armored cabin. At the same time, the number of guides was reduced to six. This made the system more compact and lighter than the heavier Tornado-S system. This design was expected to improve the MLRS's mobility and simplify its use by the military. According to procurement documents, the Russian Ministry of Defense ordered two divisions of the new MLRS in 2024. These included 12 launchers and the same number of transport and loading vehicles. The cost of each Sarma launcher was estimated at 155 million rubles, approximately $1.9 million.
Each rocket launcher cost the Russian Army 155 million rubles, or $1.9 million, which turned out to be slightly more expensive than the “Tornado-S” systems on heavy wheeled chassis, which were ordered at the same time. The TZM on the same chassis cost an additional 64 million rubles. The occupiers have publicly disclosed only limited details about the Sarma system's exact specifications. The new system's maximum engagement range is presumably comparable to that of the Tornado-S, approximately 90 to 110 kilometers. It should be noted that while repelling the occupiers' attack in the Dobropillia sector, Azov fighters destroyed 18 heavy and 47 light enemy vehicles. The enemy suffered 150 personnel losses, 120 of whom were killed.
Recently, a massive tank battle took place near Ocheretino. The Russian Armed Forces' mechanized assault was routed, and the Russians suffered heavy losses.
