Footage of a nighttime interception of a Russian jet drone by a Ukrainian MiG-29 fighter jet has been published online . The pilot of the upgraded MiG-29MU1 destroyed the target with an R-60M short-range missile . The fighter jet was on an air defense mission. The published footage shows the aircraft approaching the drone's tail, firing a missile that self-homed and, three seconds later, exploded in mid-air. Immediately after the explosion, the pilot steers the fighter to the side, dodging shrapnel. The R-60M is a Soviet compact air-to-air guided missile. It is equipped with an infrared homing head that detects the thermal radiation of a target, primarily the engine. Developed in the USSR in 1973, a modernized version of the R-60M was developed and accepted into service in 1982. The R-60M version is a later modification with a more sensitive thermal homing head and an enlarged warhead. This missile is part of the MiG-29's armament, along with the more modern R-73. Ukrainian MiG-29s have already been used to destroy Russian jet-powered drones. In September, the Center Air Command published footage of such an interception, noting that the pilot had little time to detect, target, and engage the target.
Recall, Volodymyr Zelenskyy , President of Ukraine, announced promising news regarding defense against Russian shelling. He announced the development of a new interceptor drone to combat Shahed missiles. According to him, the latest development by Ukrainian engineers has already been used against Russian drones and has proven itself to be effective.
Zelenskyy announced this following a report from SBU Director Oleksandr Poklad. The president noted that the Security Service's military counterintelligence had successfully shot down Russian UAVs.
Previously, Zelensky had already mentioned the good results of testing the new interceptors. "There is another positive result of the interceptor tests against the Shaheds: they were shot down," the president said. He announced the scaling of next-generation interceptors. "Step by step, we are finding answers to Russian threats and creating our own Ukrainian means of pressuring the enemy," Zelensky wrote. He also promised "new and long-range" strikes against the Russian rear.
