For more than two years, any tank that dared to approach the front line in Ukraine was tracked by drones and destroyed .
As The Telegraph writes, contrary to all expectations, Ukrainian tanks moved back to the battlefield this summer and held their ground.
It is noted that a carefully thought-out strategy of targeted attacks by Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles and special forces helped push back Russian troops and clear the way for heavy armored vehicles. The tanks - some of which are believed to be British Challenger 2s - played a key role in a major counter-offensive near Oleksandrivka that resulted in Ukraine recapturing 745 square kilometres of territory.
The tank relocation took eight months. First, Ukraine attacked supply lines, striking Russian convoys up to 160 kilometers behind the front lines.
Then Kyiv started eavesdropping: Ukrainian units hacked Russian soldiers' phones and read their panicked messages like "that was close" about a nearby explosion, in order to determine their location and adjust artillery fire accordingly.
Meanwhile, drone groups pursued the Russian crews until they retreated. Only then did the Ukrainian infantry advance, slipping through enemy lines on foot and clearing a path for tanks, which then advanced from the rear. It is important that tank units fired at Russian positions and helped to hold the territories recaptured by Ukraine.
This approach is spreading beyond Oleksandrivka. This week, Ukraine's 475th Assault Regiment published a video showing two tanks attacking Russian positions in Olkhovatka, near Kharkiv.
The tanks, equipped with additional armour to protect against drones, were accompanied by heavy FPV Vampire bomber drones and reconnaissance drones.
They drove over light mines, opened fire directly on the buildings where the Russian infantry was hiding, and then retreated. According to the regiment, the tanks returned undamaged. The article states:
"It was more of a raid than an offensive, but it showed that armoured vehicles survived where, not long ago, they would almost certainly have been destroyed."
Analysts said the strategy showed that heavy armor still had a place on the battlefield when units could deplete the kill zone near the front lines.
