Ukraine's deep strikes against Russia have become a crucial weapon in Kyiv's arsenal. With fewer available soldiers than Russia, Ukraine was forced to adapt quickly. Although long-range attacks have been used in the war since 2023, they have been used increasingly actively over the past year—and have become increasingly vital.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on European and NATO allies for greater support. He recently announced he would expand the deep strike campaign, explicitly ordering the destruction of launch sites in Russia, The Times reports .

"These drones are now both offensive and defensive weapons," said a 32-year-old sergeant with the call sign "Nick" during one such deep strike operation observed by war correspondent Dominik Hauschild. If they can hit missile launchers in Russia, they could stop the weapons before interceptors are needed. The unit's commander, a 36-year-old lieutenant with the call sign "Kot," surveyed his small team of about a dozen men. Although the weather was ideal for a night launch—a bright, clear sky with a gentle breeze to lift the drone—Kot had other things to think about. Russian missiles had destroyed several long-range drone teams in other units after their positions were revealed by reconnaissance drones or technologies like cell phone signal spoofing, according to media reports. Recent attacks on the annexed peninsula, which was captured by the occupiers in 2014, have been so effective that rolling power outages have become commonplace for residents. Last month, the regional administration was forced to suspend gasoline sales to all but emergency services. The Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Force, a branch of the armed forces created in 2024 to focus exclusively on drone warfare, consists of 13 separate combat units, one of which is the 413th Regiment, known as "Raid."

But deep strikes are a multidisciplinary effort, involving the army, the SBU, the Security Service of Ukraine, and the Main Intelligence Directorate. "Some units carry out the main attack, while others act as decoys, but no one unit is more important than the other," said one regiment commander, call sign "Schultz."

While Shultz is proud of what he and his team have accomplished, he admits it's still not enough. "The deep strikes have significantly changed the situation militarily, but in the meantime, we're losing the ballistic battle," he stated. "We need more air defenses, and we need access to Starlink satellites over normal Russian territory." Starlink, owned by Elon Musk's SpaceX, blocks internet access outside of Ukrainian and occupied territory, the article states.
