Russian soldiers are increasingly resorting to self-mutilation to avoid joining assault teams , and even blowing themselves up when gunshot wounds no longer protect them from the front. New audio intercepted by intelligence agencies shows that even severe injuries do not guarantee evacuation from the battlefield for the occupiers.
According to the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, occupiers previously intentionally suffered gunshot wounds to be evacuated from the front lines. Now, even this doesn't help—commands ignore such cases, forcing Russians to resort to even more desperate measures, blowing up their legs or arms.
"They're the 500s there. They blew their legs up there. Find them first, then report by radio, we'll tell you what to do next," the GUR intercept reads.
In this intercept, the occupier commander orders his subordinates only to find the wounded and report the situation by radio. There's no talk of immediately evacuating the injured soldiers—the decision on what to do next is left to the command.
The practice of self-mutilation among Russian soldiers demonstrates a profound lack of motivation in the Russian army's assault units. When even bleeding and gunshot wounds don't excuse them from combat missions, soldiers are seeking ever more radical ways to avoid attacks that often result in the deaths of entire groups.
The command's indifference to the fate of the wounded is yet another sign that the Russian command views personnel primarily as a resource for carrying out missions, rather than as people whose lives and health are worth preserving.
Media previously reported that Ukrainian intelligence officers intercepted a telephone conversation with the mother of a Russian soldier. He told her about the brutal assaults on the Russian army. Afterwards, he said, everything was littered with corpses and body parts of the occupiers themselves.
The Russian soldier's mother relayed the story to her friend. The intercepted conversation was published on the YouTube channel of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense.
"There are pieces of meat lying around, Nina. And legs, and heads, too—it's a real slaughterhouse, a dump. One head is lying there, and the eyes are open. You could go nuts... That's what they're doing—a dump, [ice], an operation, a bad mouth. Do you know where, especially, Nina?" the shocked woman said.
Even while on leave, the soldier showed his mother part of a video he'd shot himself—it featured body parts of Russians killed at the front. She told her friend she was convinced that after such an experience, other Russian occupiers would return home mentally damaged. That is, if they survived.
