Russian dictator Vladimir Putin's paranoia is growing. Amid preparations for the State Duma elections, the Kremlin has even begun to crack down on the so-called "pocket" opposition, seeking to exert maximum control over the electoral process. This is reported in The Telegraph . As an example, the publication cites Boris Nadezhdin, who positions himself as an "opposition politician." In July, he was designated a "foreign agent."
In addition, an administrative case was opened against him in connection with the publication of an image of Alexei Navalny, which the Russian regime regarded as a display of prohibited symbols.
Journalists also focus on the Yabloko party , which, as stated in the article, is the only political force in the Russian Federation that opposes the war. According to the newspaper, this party may soon face the threat of a complete ban. The publication calculated that at least 23 candidates have been barred from running in the elections in recent months. In many cases, the grounds for refusal were related to accusations of so-called "extremist activity." In addition, Russian authorities imposed sanctions on politicians for publishing links to social networks Instagram and Facebook, which are banned in Russia. What's happening indicates a further narrowing of the political space in Russia. While the Kremlin could previously tolerate the existence of a limited "systemic opposition" that created the semblance of political competition, the authorities are now demonstrating an increasingly less willingness to tolerate even controlled criticism. Journalists note that Putin is becoming increasingly dependent on Russian security agencies, particularly the FSB, and has begun to avoid traveling to regions attacked by Ukrainian drones, confirming his paranoia.
Recall, European intelligence believes that domestic political processes in Russia could lead to a coup d'état. Former US National Security Advisor John Bolton commented on media reports about a European intelligence report that assessed former Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu as a "potential destabilizing factor" for Vladimir Putin's regime. "Does Shoigu have ambitions to become the head of the Russian government? He probably does. But does he have the political capacity to build a coalition among representatives of the security forces? I don't know; I wouldn't call him the most likely candidate," Bolton said. According to the former US presidential adviser, potential candidates for the role of conspirators could be someone from the military or intelligence agencies. "If there was someone, I'd say it would be Gerasimov, essentially the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Someone directly from the military or the intelligence community, the FSB or GRU. Something like that, not someone from the civilian sphere," the source said. At the same time, Bolton noted that the Kremlin’s policy is very opaque to outside observers. The former adviser believes that dissatisfaction with Putin among the Russian military elite is growing as the Russian army is exhausted by the war and morale is falling. "How could it be otherwise, given Ukraine's resistance since early February 2022?" he added.
