Ukraine targets Russian submarines thousands of kilometers away: Moscow installed anti-drone nets

Russia has expanded its use of anti-drone networks to protect submarines at a major naval base in the Pacific Ocean, located thousands of kilometers from Ukraine and the country's arsenal of attack drones. This is evident in new satellite imagery analyzed by Business Insider .
New images obtained by American spatial intelligence company Vantor show about 10 submarines covered in anti-drone nets at the Rybachy nuclear submarine base on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula.
In photos taken in May, the base, which is the central hub of the Russian Navy's Pacific Fleet and hosts nuclear-powered ballistic missile and attack submarines, is covered in netting. It is noted that although Rybachy is located more than 7,200 kilometers east of Ukraine, the anti-drone networks replicate the defensive structures deployed by Russia much closer to the epicenter of the war to protect facilities and naval forces in the Black Sea.
The presence of these defenses so far from the conflict zone suggests that Russia views its vulnerability to drone attacks far beyond the immediate combat zone, including its Pacific Fleet.
Ukrainian forces have demonstrated their ability to strike deep into Russian territory, launching drones at targets more than 1,500 kilometers into enemy territory.
Ukraine has also carried out remote attacks on targets at much greater distances, launching attack drones not from its own territory, but from inside Russia. Vantor imagery from June shows that Russia has also equipped at least three submarines with anti-drone cages—which protect their conning towers—at the Novorossiysk naval base in the southwestern Krasnodar region. This facility serves as a base for Moscow's Black Sea Fleet and has been repeatedly attacked by Ukrainian drones.
The UK Ministry of Defence said the cages were "deployed as a pre-emptive measure in response to Ukraine's increased ability to strike targets further from the front line." Ukraine used its explosive naval drones to attack Novorossiysk, and in response, Russia attempted to defend the base by installing large barriers in the water. Anti-drone cages represent a new attempt to protect naval forces, primarily designed to counter air attacks.
Importantly, the armor net has become a common tactic on the battlefield. Early versions were installed on tanks and other armored vehicles to provide additional protection against drones and shrapnel. Since then, it has become widespread, as have anti-drone nets.
Russia has increasingly resorted to using counter-drone cells and networks to protect infrastructure and assets such as energy facilities, weapons manufacturing buildings, and, more recently, submarines.
Russia's efforts come amid a significant increase in Ukraine's long-range drone strikes on Russian territory. Traditionally, these attacks have targeted energy and military facilities, although Kyiv is increasingly focusing its efforts on Russian e-commerce warehouses.
