Russia is increasingly using Iskander-M missiles, S-300/S-400 anti-aircraft missiles, adapted Tsirkon anti-ship missiles, and North Korean KN-23 missiles to strike Ukraine. In particular, the S-400 missiles have a range of up to 200 km, allowing them to be used for strikes on Kyiv and other rear-area cities. In July, the Russians launched 126 ballistic missiles—more than in previous major attacks. And the consequences of this terror are a large number of civilian casualties. The Russians are currently counting on a shortage of interceptor missiles in Ukrainian air defense systems, as the main danger of ballistic missiles is their difficulty in intercepting them. The Iskander-M missile system has a minimal preparation time: after receiving precise coordinates, the command module requires only 15 seconds to launch the missile.
As for the ability of our forces to destroy the launchers themselves to prevent strikes, there have certainly been instances of their destruction. These primarily occurred at their permanent deployment sites, when reconnaissance was able to pinpoint their locations after a significant period of time. However, the Russians have gradually improved the protection of their storage sites and are hiding their equipment underground. This makes it more difficult to destroy them with our existing assets.
As for the probability of hitting the launcher at the moment of its deployment, it is necessary to understand that this deployment takes about six minutes.
And, if we take into account the time it takes to travel from the storage location to the launch position, then the overall “window of opportunity” for hitting such a target is from six to twenty minutes.
Furthermore, this requires us to conduct reconnaissance as quickly as possible and obtain high-quality intelligence in real time. Satellite reconnaissance typically allows us to pinpoint a launcher based on its heat signature at the moment of missile launch. However, once the missile has already launched, the window of opportunity to destroy the launcher itself significantly decreases.
Launchers are typically deployed approximately 180 km from the Ukrainian border. To cover this distance in a matter of minutes, weapons must reach speeds in excess of Mach 1.8. Theoretically, ATACMS-type ballistic missiles are suitable for such missions. However, the Ukrainian Defense Forces currently have a limited number of these weapons. Therefore, the strategic solution for Ukraine is to develop its own ballistic missiles with a range of 100 to 250 km.
Furthermore, the number of such launchers possessed by the enemy must be taken into account. Russia maintains approximately 26 launchers in the immediate launch zone along the Ukrainian border. Russia's total arsenal of such vehicles is estimated at approximately 160. Therefore, if necessary, Russia can redeploy them wherever needed.
But the enemy has a weak spot in this regard. As a reminder, the Ukrainian Defense Forces recently struck a plant in Volgograd that specializes in the production, modernization, and repair of launchers. This was painful for Russia. And that's precisely why the Russians are now trying to diversify the risks and deploy North Korean launchers and their crews in attacks on Ukraine.
