The question of whether it would be more effective to intercept Russian missiles while they were still over Ukraine, rather than waiting for them to approach Poland , requires serious discussion and should not become hostage to domestic political infighting. This opinion was expressed by Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, according to PAP.
He was asked about the statements of former Prime Minister and Development Plus Party leader Mateusz Morawiecki, who recently stated that he would not agree to the transfer of more Patriot missiles to Ukraine and that the Polish Arms Group should "perhaps" be dissolved.
Sikorsky noted that "ballistic missiles have been flying toward Kyiv for several days in a row, against which there is no defense yet," and "people are being killed in increasing numbers."
"The question of whether we can be sure that it would have been better to shoot down these Russian missiles over Ukraine, rather than perhaps later over Poland, is a topic for a very serious debate that should not become hostage to partisan rivalry," he said.
Speaking about the PGZ issue, the Deputy Prime Minister acknowledged that the world's largest defense companies – such as Boeing, Raytheon or Lockheed Martin – are private enterprises.
"In principle, Morawiecki is right that it is possible to be a private defense company and still act for the benefit of the country's defense," Sikorski said.
He noted that in Ukraine, long-range missiles, as well as short- and long-range drones, are primarily produced by the private sector. He added that Ukrainians have a "rapid feedback system about what works on the battlefield and what doesn't." The Foreign Minister added: "I'd like to see the same thing in Poland – a rich, competitive network of private companies that provide the army with the best and continually modernize it. This is a matter that's up for debate, and here I'd even agree with Morawiecki to a certain extent." Recently, following the explosion of a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile near the village of Tarnawa Kolonia in the Lublin Voivodeship, Poland began to question what was missing to intercept it . At the time, Poland deployed the same airborne assets as the Ukrainian Air Force.
The operational commander of the Polish Armed Forces, Ireneusz Nowak, reported on the events, stating that due to the predicted threat against the backdrop of a large-scale combined long-range attack by the Russian Federation on Ukraine, two F-16s were scrambled from the Lask airbase, followed by two more MiG-29s from the Malbork airbase.
