In the twentieth century, a linguistic civil war divided the Chinese-speaking world: traditional Chinese versus simplified Chinese.

Supporters of simplification believed China’s complex writing system was keeping millions of people from becoming literate. Critics feared that changing the characters would sever China from thousands of years of history, philosophy, literature, and culture.

But Mao Zedong’s real plan went far beyond simplification.

He wanted Chinese characters eliminated completely and replaced with a phonetic alphabet. Every poem by Li Bai, every classical text, every work of calligraphy—and even 我愛你—could have been permanently rewritten in Latin letters.

So what stopped him?

In one of history’s strangest twists, it may have been Joseph Stalin.

This is the story of simplified Chinese, traditional Chinese, the creation of pinyin, and the battle that nearly destroyed the Chinese written language forever.

Which do you prefer: traditional characters, simplified characters, or a phonetic alphabet? Let the Word War begin in the comments.
