Ukrainian Armed Forces detect Russian columns 10 km from the front line and destroy them

Ukrainian troops in the Orekhiv area of the Zaporizhia region are detecting Russian assault columns as they begin to advance – at a distance of over 10 kilometers. This allows them to destroy the occupiers' equipment before it even approaches Defense Forces positions. This was stated by Major Dmytro Pelykh, head of communications for the 118th Separate Mechanized Brigade, in a comment to Liga. According to him, the approaches to Malaya Tokmachka in the Zaporizhzhia region are open steppe terrain with no natural cover, and weather conditions allow for airspace control almost around the clock.

"In many cases, we detected enemy assault columns advancing at the very beginning of their advance—more than 10 kilometers. Consequently, many of them didn't even reach the middle of the contact line: we simply destroyed the equipment and then searched the bushes for and eliminated the enemy personnel," Pelykh said.

Detecting Russian columns before they reach the front lines reduces the effectiveness of the enemy's offensive. For four years, Russia has been unable to breach Ukrainian defenses in the Malaya Tokmachka area.

The military officer added that the dense mining of the area poses an additional obstacle for the Russians. According to the officer, the occupiers' equipment is being blown up by both mines laid by the Ukrainian military and minefields created by the Russians themselves in preparation for the Ukrainian counteroffensive in 2023.

Pelykh emphasized that the results are achieved not only by drones and mining, but also by the interaction of units.

"The competent actions of the command and related units are producing results – they are practically unable to advance in this direction," he noted.

Pelykh noted that the Russian army is adapting and increasing its use of drones. He said drones are currently allowing the occupiers to monitor some Ukrainian logistics routes and evacuation routes to a "significant" depth. Despite the city of Orekhov being constantly subjected to Russian shelling and airstrikes, no armed clashes have been reported in the city itself, and there are no street battles. This was stated by Vladislav Voloshin, a representative of the Southern Defense Forces, during a telethon broadcast, according to Obozrevatel.

"Orekhov is located just 15 kilometers from the positions where Russians were seen. It's quite a distance from the front. For the enemy to reach Orekhov, they'd have to break through several of our defensive lines, take control of a town like Novodanilovka, for example, or somehow infiltrate where we're waiting. So I haven't heard of any street fighting in Orekhov," Voloshin said.

He added that the city is constantly suffering from enemy shelling, drone strikes and air strikes.

"We record massive airstrikes on Orekhovo every day, with 8-15 KABs arriving, but Orekhovo is an example of our invincibility, so Orekhovo is ours," Voloshin emphasized.
