In early August, Russian troops continued their offensive operations in the Kupyansk sector but made no progress as Ukrainian forces counterattacked in the area, according to a report by the Institute for the Study of War.
Russian military correspondents claimed that the Russian army had advanced in the central part of Kupyansk, north and south of Kupyansk, and west of Kupyansk-Vuzlovy, and that the occupiers were in control of the central part of Kupyansk, while Ukrainian troops were counterattacking from the outskirts of the city.
Meanwhile, as analysts note, Ukrainian military observer Yuriy Butusov published a video on the same day showing the Defense Forces striking and destroying a Russian 2S44 Giatsint-K wheeled self-propelled artillery unit in the Kupyansk direction, marking the second confirmed destruction of such a Russian system since 2022. "Ukrainian forces are conducting both defensive and offensive operations in the Kharkiv region. On August 3, Volodymyr Degtyarev, press secretary for the 2nd Corps of the National Guard of Ukraine, reported that Ukrainian forces are conducting two operations in the Kharkiv region: one defensive operation north and east of Kharkiv and one offensive operation in the Kupyansk direction," the analysts write.
The report also notes that Ukrainian forces continue to destroy equipment in the Russian rear to prevent its redeployment to the front lines. A Ukrainian brigade operating in the northern Kharkiv region reported on August 3 that Ukrainian drone strikes destroyed several Russian tanks in the Russian rear.
As reported, analysts previously wrote that the Russian military command is lying to the Kremlin about the scale of its successes in northern Ukraine , claiming that Russian troops are actively advancing throughout the entire theater of military operations, including a section of the front line that has remained virtually unchanged for almost two years.
ISW noted that the Russian army has been announcing the capture of a new settlement in the Kharkiv and Sumy Oblasts almost daily, starting at least since July 22. On July 29, the Russians announced the capture of Nova Sich, and on July 30, the capture of Mala Slobidka and Mohrytsa in the Sumy Oblast, as well as Verivka in the Kharkiv Oblast.
However, ISW has seen no evidence that Russian forces have carried out the necessary number of redeployments, concentrations of equipment, or intensified offensive operations commensurate with the size of the territory they have claimed to have seized in recent days. But according to DeepState analysts, Russian occupation forces have made a new advance in the Kharkiv sector. The analysts noted that the changes are reflected on an updated map of combat operations, which shows the new positions of Russian troops.
