Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russian generals have begun to die not only at the front, but are also being eliminated in the rear.
Meduza estimates that at least three generals were killed in the explosions in Moscow and the Moscow region; another was shot but survived. The final victim was likely Alexander Chaiko, who was only appointed commander of the Russian Aerospace Forces in May.
According to the publication, in December 2024, Igor Kirillov, the head of the Russian Federation's radiation, chemical, and biological defense forces, became the first general killed in an act of sabotage. He was killed as he left his home on Ryazansky Prospekt in Moscow by a bomb attached to his scooter. His aide, Ilya Polikarpov, was also killed. As the publication noted, the perpetrator of the terrorist attack testified in court that he was recruited by Ukrainian intelligence services. He was sentenced to life imprisonment for his actions. Just a few months later, in April 2025, Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik, Deputy Chief of the Main Operations Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, was killed in an explosion in Balashikha, near Moscow. The bomb was planted in a car parked in the courtyard of a residential building and exploded as Moskalik approached the vehicle.
Ignat Kuzin, whom investigators labeled an "agent of the Ukrainian secret services," was arrested on charges of Moskalik's murder. He was also given a life sentence.
In December of that year, Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, head of the operational training department of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, was killed in a car bombing. The explosion occurred in a parking lot. The general managed to get into his car and drive a few meters.
Although the Russian Investigative Committee immediately opened a criminal investigation into Sarvarov's murder, no information has yet been released regarding any detainees or suspects.
In February 2026, Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev was shot in Moscow. He served as First Deputy Chief of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Federation.
Investigators named Alekseev as one of the main leaders of Russian "volunteer" formations participating in the war against Ukraine. And in April of this year, only anonymous Telegram channels reported an assassination attempt on Major General Azatbek Omurbekov. According to the "VChK-OGPU" channel, an explosive device was planted in a mailbox on the territory of a military garrison in the village of Knyaze-Volkonskoye-1 in Khabarovsk Krai. The explosion killed the commander of a training communications battalion. Nothing else is known about this assassination attempt.
However, it is known about Omurbekov himself that in 2022 he commanded the 64th Motorized Rifle Brigade, which invaded the Kyiv region and was involved in the massacre in Bucha.
And already on August 1, news broke of an assassination attempt on Colonel General Alexander Chaiko. "One of the highest-ranking generals among those targeted, Chaiko was appointed head of the Russian Aerospace Forces in May 2026. He turned 55 at the end of July," the publication wrote.
According to journalists, an explosion occurred on August 1 near the Balzi Rossi restaurant in central Moscow, where Chaiko was allegedly celebrating his birthday and one of his appointments. His name has not been officially mentioned (Telegram channels report that Chaiko was the target of the assassination attempt), the Investigative Committee has not announced the opening of a criminal case, and Russian television channels have also remained silent on the incident.
As reported, an explosion occurred at the upscale Balzi Rossi restaurant in central Moscow on the evening of August 1. The blast killed three people and injured more than 20 others.
The target of the explosion could have been the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces, Alexander Chaiko, who is on trial in Ukraine for the Bucha massacre.
Commenting on this assassination attempt, Igor Romanenko, founder of the "Close the Sky of Ukraine" Charitable Foundation, a lieutenant general, and former deputy chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, noted that in connection with the explosion in the Moscow restaurant, one can conclude that "scaling is taking place," and the effect of the use of funds is increasing.
