Russian drone factory chief gravely wounded in car bombing near Yekaterinburg
The director of a Russian factory supplying drones to the military was seriously injured after his car exploded near the city of Yekaterinburg, according to Russian state media. Russian news agencies TASS and RIA Novosti reported that Vladimir Tkachuk, the general director of Uraldronzavod, was hospitalized in serious condition following the explosion late Tuesday in the village of Bolshoy Istok, also referred to as Velikiy Istok in some reports, about 1,400 kilometers east of Moscow. TASS, citing emergency services, said Tkachuk was taken to intensive care with severe injuries. The agency later reported that authorities had opened a criminal investigation into attempted murder. According to Russian outlet Mash, the explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device planted in Tkachuk's vehicle.
Local outlet 66.RU reported that Tkachuk was not inside the car when it exploded. Instead, the vehicle's driver was killed instantly in the blast. Authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or disclosed further details about the investigation. Tkachuk heads Uraldronza-vod, which manufactures the Upyr, Ghoul first-person-view drone used by Russian forces in Ukraine. He also helped establish the engineering team that developed the low-cost drone near Yekaterinburg, a major industrial hub in Russia's Ural region. The Ghoul drone has been promoted by Russian military personnel for its resistance to electronic jamming. Tkachuk is also the author of the pro-war Telegram channel Turned in War. The explosion comes amid a series of attacks targeting Russian military and defense figures since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Russian authorities have fre-quently blamed Ukraine for such incidents, although no evidence linking Kyiv to the latest explosion has been made public.
