A video has surfaced on social media showing an unknown Ukrainian kamikaze drone during a raid on the Saratov region. The object has an unusual silhouette and is unlike the more recognizable types of drones previously frequently spotted over Russian regions. The image suggests a device with an integrated body and wing. Its silhouette resembles not a classic aircraft drone with a long fuselage and tail, but rather a flatter design, closer to a "flying wing."
Social media users note that from the ground, the aircraft's shape resembles the American Lockheed F-117A bomber.
However, it is impossible to reliably determine the model, size, engine, or specific characteristics of the device from a single blurry frame. The mere appearance of such an object over the Saratov region is more important than its precise identification, according to online reports. The region is located far from the Ukrainian border, meaning that the aircraft are again long-range drones capable of flying hundreds of kilometers and posing a threat to targets deep in the Russian rear.
The American subsonic tactical attack aircraft Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk was retired from service in 2008. However, the US Air Force plans to use the aircraft until at least 2034.
BGR explained why the US Air Force continues to operate the F-117 Nighthawk despite its retirement. The aircraft is no longer in combat, but its technology still provides useful capabilities.
It's worth noting that the F-117 Nighthawk pioneered stealth operations worldwide. Furthermore, the US intentionally added the "F" to its name to conceal the aircraft's true purpose. The publication noted that air combat was not the F-117 Nighthawk's specialty. The aircraft was designed for stealthy infiltration of enemy territory and attacking ground targets.
Thanks to its sharp design and advanced technology, the aircraft can reflect and absorb radar waves, and its speed can reach nearly 1,126 km/h. This single-pilot attack aircraft has a range of over 1,600 kilometers without refueling.
The first F-117s entered service in 1983. They were decommissioned in 2008, but the aircraft that remain airworthy are stored at Tonopah Test Range Airport in Nevada, the publication noted.
The publication reported that the US Air Force uses F-117s to train the next generation of fighter pilots and assist with new projects. These aircraft are currently used for training, particularly in stealth technology training, helping pilots and other military personnel learn to handle the stealth capabilities of enemy fighters.
The US Air Force also uses the F-117 as a testbed. New technologies, such as radar systems and infrared tracking, are tested on this retired aircraft to verify their effectiveness.
