Dr. Rainer Funk on „Bringing Psychoanalysis and Sociology together” – EFSC

01.11.2024

In his keynote at the 2nd International Erich Fromm Research Conference, organized by the Erich Fromm Study Center at the International Psychoanalytic University in Berlin, Dr. Funk is giving an overview of the development of Fromm’s theories, aiming to show, firstly, how Fromm and his theory of relatedness and social character aimed to understand the individual and society in a different way from what was usual at that time.

Secondly, how relevant the often ignored social psychoanalytical approach is for current thinking in terms of relatedness, and how open Fromm’s approach is to insights stemming from human biology. Whether Fromm’s social psychoanalysis, with its emphasis on the unconscious irrational behavior of the masses, has a chance in today’s scientific culture, is a question that applies to psychoanalysis in general as well.

We kindly thank the Karl Schlecht Foundation for their generous funding of the conference and its documentation.
