Ukrainian drones have killed or wounded more than 302,000 Russian soldiers since the beginning of 2026—a number equivalent to the personnel strength of a large military force—in less than ten months of fighting, according to Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense.

The figures highlight the scale of Ukraine’s drone operations, which have inflicted an average of more than 1,000 Russian personnel casualties per day throughout the year.

According to the ministry, every recorded strike was documented on video through Ukraine’s DELTA battlefield management system and verified by the Brave1 defense innovation cluster.

March was the deadliest month for Russian troops targeted by Ukrainian drones, with 33,989 soldiers killed or wounded. April followed closely with 33,961 casualties, while February recorded the lowest figure at 26,204.

The monthly figures show that Ukrainian drone units have consistently inflicted tens of thousands of Russian casualties, with more than 30,000 recorded in January, March, April, May, July, and September combined with other monthly totals. In September alone, Ukrainian drones killed or wounded 32,739 Russian troops. During the first 25 days of October, another 27,829 Russian personnel were recorded as killed or wounded in drone strikes.

Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said that drone operations play a central role in reducing Russia’s manpower, weakening the combat effectiveness of its military units, and slowing offensive operations.

Earlier, on October 16, the Institute for the Study of War reported that Russia had gained a net 144.5 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory between January and September 2026, roughly 45 times less than the 6,500 square kilometers claimed by Vladimir Putin. ISW estimates that Russia achieved a net territorial gain of approximately 144.5 square kilometers between January and September 2026. Russian forces also experienced periods of territorial losses, including a net loss of approximately 122 square kilometers since September 1. Russian Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov separately claimed that Russian troops had captured more than 1,800 square kilometers and 92 settlements since September. ISW’s findings contradict those figures, indicating that Ukrainian counterattacks have reversed Russian advances in several sectors.

In Donetsk region, Putin claimed that Ukrainian forces controlled only around 10% of the territory. ISW instead estimates that Ukraine retains approximately 5,530 square kilometers, representing more than 20% of the region.

The institute also found no evidence supporting Russian claims of capturing Dobropillia or entering Druzhkivka. Russian forces remain at least 12 kilometers from Druzhkivka and nine kilometers from Kramatorsk, according to the assessment.

Similar discrepancies were identified in Zaporizhzhia region. While Putin claimed Ukraine controlled just 16.5% of the region, ISW assessed Ukrainian control at approximately 24.6%.
