According to Ukrainian military data, the Gvardeysk airfield, located in the center of the Russian-occupied Ukrainian peninsula, was first identified as a launch site for attack drones in March 2025. It is now used for strikes almost daily, Radio Liberty reports.

A photograph of the facility taken on October 11 does not show any military aircraft, but does show the appearance of extensive new infrastructure, which observers believe is linked to drone operations at the Soviet-era airfield.

It is noted that the transformation of the base in Gvardeysk raises questions about why Kyiv has not yet been able to disable this facility using its own attack drones and missiles. Ukraine has repeatedly struck Russian drone storage and launch facilities in Crimea, particularly at Cape Chauda in the southeast of the peninsula and near Balaklava. Ukrainian drones also struck the airfield in Gvardeysk, but the damage was minimal.

A Crimean resident and former Ukrainian army officer explained the possible reasons why the extensive drone complex in Gvardeyskoye has not yet been disabled by Ukrainian forces. He explained:

"In my opinion, the main reason is that drone operations there are scattered across different parts of the airfield. The launch pad is in one place, the maintenance area is in another, and the storage facilities are in a third. All of this is relatively simple infrastructure that is easy to restore, and some elements are located simply in the open air."

A satellite image from October 11 shows numerous unidentified objects spaced several meters apart in the open area southwest of the airfield. A former officer of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reported that the underground aviation ammunition storage facility, built during the Soviet era and located approximately 15 kilometers from the Gvardeysk airbase, is likely used to store attack drones launched from this airfield.

"It's quite possible that they're hiding Shaheds there," he said, adding that such a fortified structure would likely be "impossible to hit even with Ukrainian missiles."

He said another reason why the Gvardeysk airbase could pose a more challenging target for Ukrainian forces is its location in central Crimea, a peninsula currently heavily fortified with air defense systems.

Unlike coastal launch sites, which can be approached from the sea, Ukrainian drones targeting Gvardeysk must fly approximately 100 kilometers overland, significantly increasing the likelihood of their interception. It was previously reported that the Russian Federation built a new drone port, Millerovo, within a month for launching Geranium-5 jet drones over Ukraine.
