Three years ago, Russia launched an offensive on Avdiivka, which gradually escalated into the third battle for Donbas in the full-scale war. Three years later, the Russian offensive is still ongoing, but at a much slower pace than before. Reputable OSINT analyst Clement Molin writes about this in his blog .
2026 proved to be a very difficult year for Russian troops: they failed to maintain the pace of advance seen in 2024 and 2025. Moreover, the Russian army faced two counterattacks—in the Komar and Liman areas. While the Russian offensive in Donbas initially focused on the southern and western sectors, the main fighting subsequently shifted to the north. Currently, the main battle continues in the Dobropillya region. The chain of towns is clearly visible on the map—from Kurakhovo through Pokrovsk all the way to Barvenkovo, located beyond the Donbas fortifications that Russia is advancing on. At the same time, the advance of Russian troops along the Donetsk-Zaporozhye road was stopped, and in the southern sector the offensive slowed. The Ukrainian Armed Forces' setbacks in 2024 and 2025 were caused by several factors, including poor coordination between units, a lack of fortifications, and the overwhelming numerical superiority of Russian troops. Most of these problems have since been resolved. The war of attrition scenario, in which Russia would gradually increase its territorial gains until Ukraine collapsed, has not materialized. On the contrary, the Russian advance is gradually slowing, and Russian army losses are mounting. Every time someone claims that Russia is clearly winning the war, show them this map and ask why the "second most powerful army in the world" is having such difficulty in Donbas, while simultaneously losing more and more troops?
He said that the likelihood of a major breakthrough by Russian troops in Ukraine is decreasing as Ukraine's defensive lines are strengthened. Fortifications built between 2014 and 2024, but primarily in 2024, cover current and former combat zones. Some are already located in the Russian rear, hindering troop movements. The map also shows lines being built starting in 2025 under the new doctrine, as well as fortifications planned or under construction in 2026. Molen noted that after several years of intensive fortification construction, the pace of work in eastern and southern Ukraine slowed this summer. The analyst cited the successes of Ukrainian forces in certain areas and the high level of defense readiness as the main reason.
In recent weeks, work has continued in the areas of Pavlohrad, Izyum, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, and Kyiv. However, closer to the front, Ukraine is also taking necessary measures, primarily to counter infantry, including installing barbed wire and razor wire. According to Molen, the map allows us to trace how Ukrainian defensive priorities have changed, the location of key logistics hubs, and which areas are most heavily defended. The analyst also noted that the Russian army has not established comparable defensive lines.
