The Energia plant in Yelets, Russia, which produces batteries for Russian aircraft and missiles, suffered critical damage in a Ukrainian attack. The extensive destruction is visible in new footage captured by local residents.
The strike was carried out on October 25 by Storm Shadow cruise missiles. Eyewitnesses counted seven to eight hits on various parts of the production complex.
OSINT expert Dnipro Osint, having analyzed the footage, concluded that one of the buildings was physically destroyed, and another was completely burned out from the inside. Both buildings are critical to the plant. "Energia is a major Russian military-industrial complex enterprise engaged in the development and production of chemical power sources. Its products are used in a wide range of Russian weapons, including the 9M723 Iskander-M ballistic missiles, the 9M727 Iskander-K cruise missiles, the 3M22 Zircon, and the Kh-47M2 Kinzhal, as well as the D-30SN and RM-4 UMBP. This means we're not talking about some run-of-the-mill battery factory, but a company whose products are used in the production of weapons with which the Russians terrorize Ukraine daily. And all it took was a few Storm Shadows. It's another reminder of how powerful these missiles are and how crucial it is to be able to use them in much larger quantities," Osinter wrote.
Military observer Alexander Kovalenko says that Russian chemical power source company PJSC Energia, attacked by the Ukrainian army, is of paramount importance to the Russian military-industrial complex. It is involved in the production chains of several specific missile systems .
"Why is this plant important for the Russian military-industrial complex if it was hit by something so serious that, based on the first frames of the video and the detonation effect, it could be assessed as a Storm Shadow/SCALP EG cruise missile? "Energia is involved in the production chains of several specific missile systems. This doesn't involve producing entire missiles, but rather supplying power elements for their onboard systems," the analyst stated. In particular, we are talking about a unified planning and correction module. In addition, the plant supplies 9B283 thermal batteries for the 9M723 Iskander-M ballistic missile system and 9B280-1 power elements for the 9M727/728 Iskander-K cruise missile system. The production cooperation produces T-657 chemical power sources for the 3M22 Zircon missile. The plant also produces 9-S-7760.00.01.00 onboard batteries, related to the production cooperation for the Kh-47M2 Kinzhal missile. The plant also manufactures the 9B281 battery for the 95Ya6 surface-to-air missile used by the Pantsir-S1 anti-aircraft gun and missile system. "In modern missiles and guided munitions, power sources power the electronic and control systems. Specifically, special thermal batteries can be activated immediately before use and provide the necessary power for a limited time," the expert explained.
