Russia’s latest upgraded Geran-5 K5-K cruise missile, designed to navigate without satellite signals and resist electronic warfare, has crashed in Ukraine’s Odesa region, with newly released photographs showing the advanced weapon lying largely intact in an open field. According to Defence Blog, the missile, bearing serial number ANS-3031, was discovered following a Russian attack. The circumstances surrounding its fall remain unclear, with no confirmation of whether it was intercepted by Ukrainian air defenses, disrupted by electronic warfare, or brought down by a technical malfunction.
The photographs reveal the redesigned fuselage of the Geran-5 K5-K, one of Russia’s newest jet-powered strike weapons, which reportedly entered combat use in late September 2026.
Unlike earlier versions, the upgraded missile features smaller swept-back wings, a modified tail section, and a turbojet engine integrated directly into its fuselage rather than mounted externally. One of its most significant upgrades is an autonomous optical navigation system designed to operate without satellite signals.
According to Ukrainian defense technology adviser Serhii “Flash” Beskrestnov, the system compares images of the terrain below with stored reference data, allowing the missile to adjust its flight path even when satellite navigation is unavailable or disrupted by electronic warfare.
This technology is intended to make the weapon more resistant to Ukrainian electronic warfare systems, which are widely used to interfere with Russian drones and missiles.
Russian developers are reportedly seeking to increase the upgraded missile’s speed to as much as 900 km/h, although it remains unclear whether the latest version has achieved that capability.
Russia first deployed the original Geran-5 against Ukraine in January 2026. Ukrainian military intelligence identified the weapon as a turbojet-powered cruise missile with a conventional aerodynamic configuration resembling Iran’s Karrar drone.
The original Geran-5 measures approximately 6.5 meters in length, has a wingspan of 3.2 meters, and carries a warhead weighing around 90 kilograms. Its reported operational range reaches approximately 1,000 kilometers, with cruising speeds between 450 and 600 km/h.
Earlier, Russia’s Alabuga plant in Tatarstan reportedly reached a production capacity of over 3,500 Geran-4 and Geran-5 jet-powered drones per month, alongside more than 3,000 Shahed-type drones, with support from Chinese technology and components.
