Ukrainian soldiers have risked their lives to rescue eight civilians trapped in the eastern frontline city of Lyman, with one serviceman sustaining a severe injury after using his own body to shield the group from a Russian drone attack. The two-day evacuation was carried out by troops from the 63rd Separate Mechanized Brigade, part of Ukraine’s Third Army Corps, amid relentless Russian drone strikes and the threat of enemy ambushes, according to the brigade’s press service. The rescue operation began after soldiers from the 7th Company of the 3rd Mechanized Battalion completed their initial combat mission and learned that civilians remained trapped in the war-torn city. The troops then organized a separate mission to bring them to safety, navigating dangerous routes under constant aerial surveillance and repeated attacks. A video shared by the brigade documents the operation, highlighting the dangers faced by Ukrainian servicemen as they worked to evacuate civilians from the frontline area. The rescue team included Ukrainian soldiers and French and American legionnaires operating under the call signs Flash, Cowboy, Spad, Chandra and Fanta. Aerial reconnaissance units monitored the area from above, helping identify safer routes and alerting the team to potential enemy ambushes. Mortar crews and an unmanned ground vehicle unit also supported the mission, while MaxxPro armoured vehicles were used to overcome particularly difficult sections of the route.
The most dangerous moment came during the final stage of the evacuation, when a Russian first-person-view drone detected the group and launched an attack. One of the Ukrainian servicemen shielded the civilians with his own body, absorbing the impact and suffering a severe injury in the process.
The soldier was subsequently evacuated with assistance from the reconnaissance platoon and received medical treatment. His actions helped save the lives of the civilians accompanying the group.
The eight evacuees included an elderly woman, three wheelchair users and a man suffering from a severe leg injury. All were successfully transported to a safe location. The Third Army Corps described the operation as an example of the extraordinary risks Ukrainian troops face while attempting to protect civilians in frontline communities. The corps also urged residents of settlements near the front line to evacuate before conditions deteriorate further, warning that delaying departure can make rescue operations increasingly dangerous and, in some cases, impossible.
