Long-range drones have significantly enhanced Ukraine's ability to strike military and industrial targets deep behind Russian lines . And the secret Kairos unit of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' Unmanned Systems Forces plays a significant role in this deep strike campaign, Bloomberg reports .
According to the battalion commander, call sign Rey, at the beginning of his mission, he used medium-range drones capable of flying about 100 kilometers and carrying a warhead weighing about five kilograms. Now, the unit uses small, inexpensive cruise missiles that strike air defense systems, oil refineries, and gas terminals at significant distances.
The success of such operations is ensured not only by improved production but also by meticulous planning. Ukrainian military personnel use detailed maps, satellite imagery from Western partners, intelligence data, and the expertise of energy industry specialists to identify vulnerabilities in Russian enterprises. "We needed to obtain the most recent satellite images not only of the strike targets but also previous images to compare changes over time and thus identify targets to target," Rey explained. Specifically, in September, Kairos and other units set a fire at an oil refinery near Moscow.
As the publication notes, communication also plays a crucial role. Starlink doesn't work in Russia, making drone control difficult. Therefore, strikes with cruise missiles programmed to fly to preset coordinates have their advantages, while in occupied Ukrainian territories, remote control allows for video surveillance almost right up until the moment of impact.
The scale of operations is also growing. According to Ray, his unit was the first to plan and execute a strike campaign against tankers in the Sea of Azov, hitting 60 vessels within a month. Kairos was subsequently expanded to become the 7th Separate Unmanned Systems Forces Center, which numbers hundreds of service members.
"Especially in Crimea, throughout the entire sea, we can work seven times harder," the commander stated, emphasizing the unit's potential with additional funding.
