Anxiety is growing in Iran amid fears that the US and Israel could resume strikes. Residents in Tehran are stocking up on food, filling their gas tanks, and withdrawing money from their accounts, while some families are afraid to send their children to school. The New York Times reports this. According to sources, negotiations on an agreement between Tehran and Washington have reached a deadlock. Amid the threat of a new war, the situation is exacerbated by economic difficulties, rising commodity prices, and a sharp decline in the Iranian currency.
Washington has not yet made a final decision on resuming strikes on Iran. Some bloggers are urging their followers to exercise caution in the coming days and avoid non-essential travel.
According to residents, preparation for a possible war has gradually become a normal part of life, and the constant anticipation of new hostilities is emotionally draining. Since June 2025, Iran has already experienced two periods of intense military clashes.
"I just told my wife not to wake our son this morning and to leave him at home. We'll decide what to do next, day by day," the local businessman emphasized. Iranians say the unpredictability of US President Donald Trump's actions only increases their anxiety. Shadi, a teacher in Tehran, said she intends to go to work every day until the government announces school closures.
At the same time, she constantly thinks about how to protect students and help them not panic if explosions start during classes.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Iran faces additional restrictions on foreign trade: following the imposition of a US naval blockade, its land routes are also under threat. Iraq and Pakistan have closed several key border crossings used for Iranian goods and exports. Neighboring countries' decisions could increase pressure on Tehran's economy. Official explanations for this differ, however. Iraqi authorities claim the closure of the crossings is necessary to combat smuggling, while Pakistani officials attribute their actions to compliance with sanctions against Iran.
Problems have already affected freight transport. According to Iranian media, approximately 17,000 trucks are backed up at the country's borders with Turkey, Afghanistan, and Azerbaijan. In some cases, drivers are having to wait up to 20 days to cross the border.
Long delays lead to spoilage of goods. The Iranian Truck Drivers Association reported that some truckers were forced to abandon shipments of fruit and other agricultural produce because they spoiled while waiting. Restrictions also affect energy exports. More than 4,500 tons of liquefied natural gas were stranded on the Iranian side of the border with Pakistan after the closure of border crossings. This creates additional difficulties for Tehran, which continues to export only a limited range of energy products.
Washington, for its part, intends to increase pressure on Iran by restricting overland trade. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent previously stated that the American administration is working with Pakistan and Turkey to shut down trade routes used by Tehran.
