Defense Forces operations using drones and underground tunnels are depriving Russia of the ability to infiltrate Kupyansk from the north, according to analysts from the Institute for the Study of War , citing a statement by Joint Forces Group press secretary Viktor Tregubov.
Experts note that Russian troops are advancing through Golubovka, located north of Kupyansk. However, the occupiers do not permanently station troops there. Furthermore, Russians rarely manage to enter Radkovka, only doing so in poor weather conditions, which indicates the successful operation of Ukrainian drone operators.
At the same time, Ukrainian defenders took control of a section of the underground pipeline extending from Radkovka to a point northeast of Holubovka. It is in this area that the pipeline passes under the Oskol River. This prevents Russia from reaching the northern part of Kupyansk. The combination of this tactic and maintaining air superiority prevents Russia from conducting infiltration operations into Kupyansk. Commenting on other sections of the front, experts noted that Russia attempted to advance in the Novopavlovka and Aleksandrovka areas, but was unsuccessful. The Defense Forces also counterattacked in this area. The analysts did not report the results of these attacks.
Furthermore, experts note the counterattacks of the Defense Forces in the Orekhovo direction, which thwarted Russia's offensive plans. The Atlantic previously noted that underground fighting has effectively marked a new stage in the Russian-Ukrainian war, as neither side is able to overcome the "death zone" above ground. As one fighter told reporters, the Russians were the first to realize this, but now the Defense Forces are catching up with the occupiers. All of this marks a larger shift in the war's tide, the journalists write. "The destruction zone expands every day, becoming ever wider and more deadly. So what's the solution? We need to go underground. At least there, the drones can't see you. The Russians were the first to understand this and pioneered a new approach to warfare. Now we're catching up," Brigadier General Igor Obolensky, commander of a unit of several thousand Ukrainian troops, told the publication.
The article notes that these battles, which have not previously been reported in detail, mark a larger shift in the course of the war. The publication reported that due to the intensification of shelling of Kyiv and other cities by Russian missiles and drones, many civilians were forced to take refuge underground.
In particular, underground classrooms were installed in schools, and part of the electrical network was also moved underground.
Weapons factories also typically operate in massive bunkers, and the fighting takes place underground—one of the few places in Ukraine that remains safe from drones and missiles.
The publication does not rule out the possibility that the outcome of these battles could determine the course of the war. Several Ukrainian military officers and high-ranking officials told the publication that the Russians have been stockpiling supplies and mobilizing soldiers for a year in preparation for a winter offensive. They fear that the goal of the offensive will be a breakthrough in the "death zone" and the capture of all of eastern Ukraine, which Russia could use next year for another offensive on the center of the country and its capital.
"Control over the gas pipeline network in the disputed Donbas region could give Russia a decisive advantage in the winter campaign," Obolensky noted.
His troops, part of a military corps called "Charter," realized the importance of the pipeline network in the spring of 2025, when Russian forces used it to penetrate Ukrainian lines and launch a series of surprise attacks.
“They emerged from underground like devils,” Obolensky recalled.
