On the surface, neither side has found a way to advance through the so-called "death zone" – a new kind of "no man's land" tens of miles wide where drones can detect and attack any bunker or vehicle, even a lone soldier trudging across a field, The Atlantic reports .

"The destruction zone expands every day, becoming ever wider and more deadly. So what's the solution? We need to go underground. At least there, the drones can't see you. The Russians were the first to understand this and pioneered a new approach to warfare. Now we're catching up," Brigadier General Igor Obolensky, commander of a unit of several thousand Ukrainian troops, told the publication.

The article notes that these battles, which have not previously been reported in detail, mark a larger shift in the course of the war. The publication reported that due to the intensification of shelling of Kyiv and other cities by Russian missiles and drones, many civilians were forced to take refuge underground.

In particular, underground classrooms were installed in schools, and part of the electrical network was also moved underground.

Weapons factories also typically operate in massive bunkers, and the fighting takes place underground—one of the few places in Ukraine that remains safe from drones and missiles.

The publication does not rule out the possibility that the outcome of these battles could determine the course of the war. Several Ukrainian military officers and high-ranking officials told the publication that the Russians have been stockpiling supplies and mobilizing soldiers for a year in preparation for a winter offensive. They fear that the goal of the offensive will be a breakthrough in the "death zone" and the capture of all of eastern Ukraine, which Russia could use next year for another offensive on the center of the country and its capital.

"Control over the gas pipeline network in the disputed Donbas region could give Russia a decisive advantage in the winter campaign," Obolensky noted.

His troops, part of a military corps called "Charter," realized the importance of the pipeline network in the spring of 2025, when Russian forces used it to penetrate Ukrainian lines and launch a series of surprise attacks.

“They emerged from underground like devils,” Obolensky recalled.

It is indicated that the enemies usually penetrated in bad weather, when it was difficult for drones to detect Russians emerging from underground.

The publication reported that Ukrainians initially reacted to this by playing a deadly game of whack-a-mole.

"We tried to find their exit points and destroyed them when they surfaced. But they simply continued to appear several kilometers behind our lines and attack us," Obolensky added. The article states that to better understand the scale of the threat, the general requested maps of the pipeline network from Ukraine's state energy company.

The documents revealed the gravity of the danger: a network of at least 57 steel pipes, most of which were between one and two meters in diameter, ran beneath the combat zone.
