A Ukrainian missile strike has hit the Proton plant in the Russian city of Oryol, a facility supplying electronic components to Russia’s military-industrial complex. Video shared on social media shows a powerful explosion followed by flames and thick smoke rising from the site of the strike, as fire spreads across the facility in the aftermath of the attack. Three bodies have been recovered from the rubble, regional Governor Andrey Klychkov said on October 24, following the attack a day earlier. The plant manufactures semiconductors, LEDs and electronic components for industrial applications and specialised equipment. Ukrainian monitoring Telegram channels reported that its products are used in Russian weapons systems, including Iskander-M ballistic missiles and Pantsir-S1 air-defence systems.
Eight people were injured in the strike, most of them sustaining minor injuries, Klychkov said. A major fire broke out at the facility but was later extinguished. Several apartment buildings sustained window damage, and a number of cars were also damaged.
Ukrainian monitoring channels identified the Proton plant as one of Russia’s key optoelectronics manufacturers serving the defence industry. According to Exile+, at least one production workshop was destroyed, with its upper floors, roof and facade collapsing. The Ukrainian Telegram channel Supernova+ initially claimed that 13 people had been killed and more than 30 were missing. These figures have not been independently verified. Meanwhile, Russia’s Defence Ministry claimed that 87 Ukrainian drones had been intercepted or destroyed over seven Russian regions and annexed Crimea, including the Oryol region.
