In the Kharkiv region, an occupier surrendered after border guards aimed a drone with a loudspeaker at him. The incident was reported. Initially, the fighters detected a small enemy infantry group and attacked it, after which one of the Russians decided to cease resistance. The drone, under the control of its operators, escorted him to Ukrainian positions until the captive reached his destination.
The State Border Service of Ukraine reported the incident on its Telegram channel. The agency clarified that the incident was recorded by members of the 4th detachment.
The State Defense Service of Ukraine briefly described the entire event: after the defeat of the occupying group, one of the Russian soldiers decided to surrender, and it was then that a drone with a loudspeaker was activated, directing the prisoner to the positions of the Defense Forces.
The use of drones with loudspeakers allows border guards not only to engage targets but also to safely escort those occupiers who decide to surrender, all the way to Ukrainian positions. This reduces the risks for Ukrainian soldiers, who would otherwise have to approach the enemy in person to accept the surrender.
Media previously reported that Russian soldiers are increasingly surrendering , with the Ukrainian exchange fund losing 858 prisoners in the first eight months of 2026. The Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War attributes this trend to systematic work with Russians, demonstrating to them that surrendering offers a chance to save their lives. They recalled that as recently as 2023, Russian propaganda was spreading fake news about over 20,000 Ukrainian soldiers in captivity, and in January 2024, the Russian president claimed the prisoner ratio was supposedly "one to ten" in Moscow's favor. In fact, as the headquarters notes, since mid-2023, the situation has been developing in the opposite direction: Ukraine has begun capturing more Russian soldiers than Russia has captured Ukrainian ones. In 2024 and 2025, Ukraine's exchange fund grew faster than Russia's, and this year the gap has only widened. The Coordination Headquarters attributes this dynamic primarily to the actions of Ukrainian soldiers, who risk their lives to capture the enemy alive. They also attribute this to systematic outreach to Russian soldiers, who are shown that surrendering offers a chance to save their lives, and that conditions in captivity remain normal. Media also reported that border guards from the Chimera unit demonstrated how FPV drones can enter camouflaged Russian dugouts even through narrow entrances, after which the shelter, along with the personnel, ceases to exist.
The "I Want to Live" project has been running since September 2022, explaining to Russian soldiers how to safely surrender and what awaits them afterward. The project's website has currently been visited by over 50 million people, primarily from Russia, and interviews with prisoners and information about their conditions of detention are widely shared among Russian audiences.
