Russia has opened a new longevity research laboratory at its Skolkovo innovation center, as Maria Vorontsova, the daughter of Russian leader Vladimir Putin, predicts major scientific breakthroughs in extending human life within the next 10 to 20 years. According to The Insider, the laboratory’s opening comes amid growing interest in longevity research in Russia, with Vorontsova publicly expressing optimism about future advances in the field.
Vorontsova, who heads the Medical Research and Education Institute at Moscow State University, said current science has made limited progress in extending human life beyond what she described as its natural potential of 85 to 90 years. She identified the fact that aging is not officially classified as a disease as a major obstacle to developing treatments, since clinical trials generally require a clearly defined medical diagnosis.
Vorontsova suggested that humanity’s universal fear of death could push healthcare authorities to address these regulatory barriers within the next 10 to 20 years.
The new Skolkovo laboratory will examine how longer lifespans could reshape healthcare, employment, markets, and government policy. Its researchers are expected to develop recommendations for improving older people’s quality of life.
The initiative comes amid broader Russian government efforts to develop anti-aging technologies.
In 2025, Vorontsova received a 30-million-ruble or approximately $370,000 grant from the Russian Science Foundation to establish a laboratory studying cellular renewal and active longevity. In May 2026, The Wall Street Journal reported that Russia was financing a $26 billion anti-aging initiative under its national healthcare technology program. The initiative reportedly includes organ bioprinting, xenotransplantation using miniature pigs, and gene therapy. The program is led by two figures in Putin's inner circle: his daughter Maria Vorontsova, an endocrinologist overseeing state-backed genetics programs, and Mikhail Kovalchuk, a physicist who heads the Soviet-era Kurchatov Institute and is the brother of Putin's close banking ally Yuri Kovalchuk.
Kovalchuk has become the intellectual architect of the Kremlin's longevity drive. "It is difficult to discuss immortality, but the ability to repair man will undoubtedly increase," he told Russian media.
The Kremlin confirmed broad state involvement, noting in an emailed statement that "work is underway on a whole range of scientific programs in this field" and that "many scientific and research institutions are taking part in them."
The initiative has nonetheless produced little peer-reviewed work in major international journals. Alexander Ostrovskiy, a Russian bioprinting pioneer who left the country after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine and sold his company, offered a blunt assessment. "If there are no publications, then there are no real results, and their statements should probably be taken as aspirations, not to say dreams," Ostrovskiy stated.
Putin, who is 73, has spent decades projecting physical vigor—hunting shirtless, playing hockey, and riding motorcycles in staged displays of stamina. The preoccupation with bodily decline nonetheless shapes his conduct in concrete terms.
