The downing of six Su-34M bombers by a Neptune missile at the Borisoglebsk military airfield cost Moscow at least $150 million, according to Stepan Yakimyak, a retired Ukrainian Navy Captain, a PhD candidate in military science, and an expert at the Center for Defense Strategies, speaking on the telethon.

According to him, this refers to the missile's high accuracy and the Neptune's ability to approach its target despite enemy air defense systems. The specialist believes this is a unique missile, which has already demonstrated such capabilities during the downing of the Russian Black Sea Fleet flagship, the cruiser Moskva, in 2022, when it "silently approached" the ship and destroyed it.

He noted that Russia has between 120 and 180 such aircraft in service. All of these aircraft cannot be deployed against Ukraine at the same time, which is why Ukraine has reduced the effectiveness of these aircraft by 5-10%.

"What is the effectiveness of these aircraft's strikes on targets in Ukraine? Last month, approximately 9,000 aerial bomb strikes were carried out from these aircraft. That's an average of 30 strikes per day. If we're talking about this percentage of losses… we've reduced it by 20-30," the expert said.

According to some reports, he added, Russia is capable of producing no more than 10-12 such bombers per year. Therefore, replacing the losses would take at least six months. However, in reality, it will take significantly longer, as there are still issues related to electronics and other issues. Yakimyak emphasized:

"So, we have an operational effect here. There's an effect in terms of the adversary's military-economic potential in war. And, of course, there's also a financial effect. After all, judging by the cost of these aircraft, direct losses amounted to at least about $150 million... Therefore, these are painful losses for the adversary, and I believe this will be a significant day in the history of warfare, when a single missile system, designed as an anti-ship missile, destroyed such targets."

He added that further successes in the use of Neptunes can be expected. After all, the warhead of this missile exceeds 200 kg, and its range is 1,000 km. At the same time, it is known that important Russian targets are located within this "radius," including Russian Armed Forces command centers, including those in the Moscow region.

"Considering the accuracy of this missile, it can be assumed that group salvoes of these missiles, combined with the use of drones and other means, could achieve the destruction of important targets," the expert emphasized.
