By many estimates, Ukraine remains the most mined country in the world, but mine clearance efforts are already underway. Meanwhile, demining teams are developing new methods using drones and artificial intelligence, according to an article in The Guardian .
It is noted that work is underway in the de-occupied territories to search for and destroy explosive ordnance, including anti-personnel mines. Mines that detonate due to vibration when approached have become particularly dangerous. Adding to the danger is the fact that there remain far more of these mines than during previous wars, as drones were used to mine the territory.
But mine clearance is also becoming more technologically advanced. $1.5 billion has already been invested in this area. For example, small excavation drones are being used, which can complete the task many times faster than a human deminer. One of these machines resembles a small tank, controlled remotely by an operator. It uses jets of compressed air, creating noise, dust, and vibrations to detonate mines. Satellite images of areas considered mined are also being taken, and AI is being actively used to analyze the images. It's worth noting that approximately 23 percent of Ukraine's territory is considered mined. Clearing it could take more than 10 years . Therefore, even after the fighting ends, the threat to civilians may remain. All experts agree that Ukraine is one of the most heavily mined countries. Not only in areas liberated after more than six months of occupation, but even in those where the Russians were stationed for only a month, such as Bucha near Kyiv. "We understand what kind of neighbor we have. Therefore, I believe that after the war, the entire territory between Russia and Ukraine will be mined to prevent another invasion," says Ukrainian MP and counterintelligence colonel Roman Kostenko.
"Combat operations may cease, but the threat from mines to ordinary citizens remains. For example, 'humanitarian demining' teams in Afghanistan are still removing mines left over from the Soviet," explained demining specialist Yulia Chikolba.
